WHEREAS, Barry Goldwater, United States Senator from our
neighbor State of Arizona, began a long and distinguished career
in Public Service as a City Councilman of the City of Phoenix,
Arizona, in 1949; and

WHEREAS, prior to that time he had been active in civic
affairs in his home city, having served as head of the Community
Chest Drive, and at one time received the Man of the Year Award
of the Phoenix Advertising Club; and
WHEREAS, Barry Goldwater served in the United States Air Force
during World War II, and flew many supply missions from India across
"The Hump" into China, and is now a Major General in the Air Force
Reserve; and
WHEREAS, since his election to the United States Senate in
1952, he has continued his distinguished career in the interest of
all of the people of his country; and
WHEREAS, he has long spoken for the conservative philosophy in
Government, and has become known as Mr. Conservative; and
WHEREAS, Barry Goldwater has been chosen by the Republican
Party as its candidate for President of the United States, and in
his quest for election to that high office he will come to Corpus
Christi; and
WHEREAS, this is the first time in the history of our City
that a Republican Candidate for the presidency of the United States
has brought his campaign to this City, and because of his coming
thousands of visitors will come from this area of Southwest Texas
to join the many supporters of Barry Goldwater, and his visit will
give our City favorable publicity through these United States; and
WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi wishes to officially
welcome Barry Goldwater to our City:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, in regular assembly, that Saturday,
October 24, 1964, be, and it is hereby declared

"BARRY GOLDWATER DAY IN CORPUS CHRISTI"
and we extend to the United States Senator from the State of
Arizona our most sincere and warmest 'Official Welcome" on his W
visit to our City, and we cordially invite all citizens of Corpus
Christi and of Southwest Texas to hear Barry Goldwater at the
Coliseum on our beautiful Bayfront on that day.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all citizens extend a warm
welcome and usual display of South Texas hospitality to Senator
Barry Goldwater during the time he is in our City.

FOR THE REASONS SET FORTH IN THE EMERGENCY CLAUSE OF THE FORE-
GOING ORDINANCE, A PUBLIC EMERGENCY AND IMPERATIVE NECESSITY EXIST FOR
THE SUSPENSION OF THE CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT THAT NO ORDINANCE OR
RESOLUTION SHALL BE PASSED FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCED, AND THAT
SUCH ORDINANCE OR RESOLUTION SHALL BE READ AT THREE MEETINGS OF THE CITY
COUNCIL; 1, THEREFORE, HEREBY REQUEST THAT YOU SUSPEND SAID CHARTER RULE
OR REQUIREMENT AND PASS THIS ORDINANCE FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRO-
DUCED, OR AT THE PRESENT MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL.
