WHEREAS, THE TEXAS HIGHWAY COMMISSION IS ABOUT TO CONSIDER THE
EXTENSION OF U. S. HIGHWAY 96 FROM PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS, TO BROWNSVILLE,
TEXAS, AND FROM TENAHA, TEXAS, TO THE LOUISIANA LINE, NEAR SHREVEPORT; AND
WHEREAS, THE PROPOSED EXTENSION TO U. S. HIGHWAY 96 WOULD FOLLOW
THE ROUTE OF STATE HIGHWAY 87 FROM PORT ARTHUR TO GALVESTON, STATE HIGHWAY
6 FROM GALVESTON TO ALVIN, STATE HIGHWAY 35 FROM ALVIN TO GREGORY, U. S.
HIGHWAY 181 FROM GREGORY TO CORPUS CHRISTI, STATE HIGHWAY 44 FROM CORPUS
CHRISTI TO ROBSTOWN, AND U. S. HIGHWAY 77 FROM ROBSTOWN TO BROWNSVILLE; AND
WHEREAS, THE PROPOSED EXTENSION OF U. S. HIGHWAY 96 NORTHWARD FROM
TENAHA WOULD FOLLOW U. S. HIGHWAY 59 TO CARTHAGE AND U. S. HIGHWAY 79 FROM
CARTHAGE TO THE LOUISIANA LINE; AND
WHEREAS, THE PROPOSAL TO COMPLETE SAID ROUTING FROM SHREVEPORT
TO BROWNSVILLE WILL, IF APPROVED BY THE TEXAS AND LOUISIANA HIGHWAY DEPART-
MENTS, BE SUBMITTED TO THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY OFFICIALS
FOR FINAL APPROVAL AND DESIGNATION; AND
WHEREAS, CITIES ALONG THE ROUTE POINT OUT THAT THE DESIGNATION
OF A SINGLE U. S. HIGHWAY PARALLELING THE SCENIC GULF COAST WILL BE A
STIMULATION TO TOURIST TRAFFIC AND ENHANCE TRAVEL BETWEEN THE PINE AND
LAKE AREA OF EAST TEXAS AND THE PALMS AND SEA ISLANDS OF SOUTH TEXAS; AND
WHEREAS, THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI IS INTERESTED IN SAID DESIG-
NATION, WHICH WOULD BE AN AID TO TOURISTS AS WELL AS LOCAL CITIZENS:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. THAT THE TEXAS HIGHWAY COMMISSION BE URGED TO AID
IN THE DESIGNATION OF SUCH HIGHWAY, AS PROPOSED, AND APPROVE THE SAID
ROUTING TO THE EXTENT OF THEIR JURISDICTION.
SECTION 2. BE ?URTHER RESOLVED THAT

RESOLUTION SHALL BE READ AT THREE MEETINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL; I, THEREFORE, '
REQUEST THAT YOU SUSPEND SAID CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT AND PASS THIS ORDI- , -
NANCE FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCED, OR AT THE PRESENT MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL.
