HomeMy WebLinkAbout08832 RES - 04/10/1968�1_ • A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, REVEREND MARTIN LUTHER KING, A NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER, WAS ASSASSINATED ON APRIL 4, 1968; AND WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING PREACHED THE CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLE OF NONVIOLENCE IN HIS EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF HIS RACE; AND WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING BROUGHT INTERNATIONAL FAME TO THE UNITED STATES WHEN HE WON THE 19614 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR HIS ACTIVITIES IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS FIELD; AND WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING SOUGHT NOT ONLY TO ACHIEVE A DIGNITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF HIS OWN RACE, BUT ALSO, THROUGH A STRONG SENSE OF BROTHER- HOOD, TO PURGE THE POISON OF RACIAL BIGOTRY AND PREJUDICE FROM THE MINDS OF THE PEOPLE OF ALL RACES: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. THAT THIS CITY COUNCIL HEREBY RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANT ROLE IN HISTORY FILLED BY THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING BY SPREADING THESE WORDS ON THE OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE CITY; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THIS COUNCIL, AS THE ELECTED REPRESENTA- TIVES OF THE CITIZENS OF THIS CITY, HUMBLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE LOSS CAUSED BY THE DEATH OF ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST INFLUENTIAL LEADERS IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, AND THAT WE, BY THIS RESOLUTION AND OUR PRAYERS, EXPRESS OUR HOPE THAT HIS LIFE, TAKEN BY SUCH VIOLENCE, WILL NOW INSPIRE US TO DISCUSS OUR DIFFERENCES AND SETTLE OUR PROBLEMS AT THE CONFERENCE TABLE, AND NOT IN THE STREETS, BY RESPECTING AND UPHOLDING THE LAW RATHER THAN BY TAKING IT INTO OUR OWN HANDS. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE FURNISHED TO THE WIFE AND FAMILY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING IN MEMORY OF THIS DEPARTED LEADER AND CITIZEN. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL "'7i7" CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS FOR THE - REASONS SET FORTH IN THE EMERGENCY CLAUSE OF THE FOREGOING ORDINANCE, A PUBLIC EMERGENCY AND IMPERATIVE NECESSITY EXIST FOR THE SUSPEN- SION OF THE CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT THAT NO ORDINANCE OR RESOLUTION SHALL BE PASSED FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCED, AND THAT SUCH ORDINANCE OR RESOLUTION SHALL BE READ AT THREE MEETINGS OF THE CITY COUNCILS I, THEREFORE, REQUEST THAT YOU SUSPEND SAID CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT AND PASS THIS ORDI- NANCE FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCED, OR AT THE PRESENT MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL.
