A RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, REVEREND MARTIN LUTHER KING, A NATIONAL CIVIL RIGHTS
LEADER, WAS ASSASSINATED ON APRIL 4, 1968; AND
WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING PREACHED THE CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLE OF
NONVIOLENCE IN HIS EFFORTS TO ACHIEVE EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE
PEOPLE OF HIS RACE; AND
WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING BROUGHT INTERNATIONAL FAME TO THE
UNITED STATES WHEN HE WON THE 19614 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR HIS ACTIVITIES
IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS FIELD; AND
WHEREAS, MARTIN LUTHER KING SOUGHT NOT ONLY TO ACHIEVE A DIGNITY
FOR THE PEOPLE OF HIS OWN RACE, BUT ALSO, THROUGH A STRONG SENSE OF BROTHER-
HOOD, TO PURGE THE POISON OF RACIAL BIGOTRY AND PREJUDICE FROM THE MINDS
OF THE PEOPLE OF ALL RACES:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. THAT THIS CITY COUNCIL HEREBY RECOGNIZES THE IMPORTANT
ROLE IN HISTORY FILLED BY THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING BY SPREADING THESE
WORDS ON THE OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE CITY;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THIS COUNCIL, AS THE ELECTED REPRESENTA-
TIVES OF THE CITIZENS OF THIS CITY, HUMBLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE LOSS CAUSED BY
THE DEATH OF ONE OF THE NATION'S MOST INFLUENTIAL LEADERS IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT, AND THAT WE, BY THIS RESOLUTION AND OUR PRAYERS, EXPRESS OUR HOPE
THAT HIS LIFE, TAKEN BY SUCH VIOLENCE, WILL NOW INSPIRE US TO DISCUSS OUR
DIFFERENCES AND SETTLE OUR PROBLEMS AT THE CONFERENCE TABLE, AND NOT IN THE
STREETS, BY RESPECTING AND UPHOLDING THE LAW RATHER THAN BY TAKING IT INTO
OUR OWN HANDS.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE FURNISHED
TO THE WIFE AND FAMILY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING IN MEMORY OF THIS DEPARTED
LEADER AND CITIZEN.
PASSED AND APPROVED THIS THE 1OTH DAY OF APRIL, 1968.
