A RESOLUTION
DECLARING 1969 AS THE 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
DISCOVERY OF CORPUS CHRISTI BAY, AND DESIGNATING
A MEDAL COMMEMORATIVE THEREOF.
WHEREAS, 1969 IS THE 1150TH ANNIVERSARY, THE DATE GENERALLY
ACCEPTED AS THE OCCASION OF THE DISCOVERY OF CORPUS CHRISTI BAY BY
ALONZO ALVAREZ DE PINEDA, ON CORPUS CHRISTI DAY OF 1519; AND
WHEREAS, IT 15 FITTING THAT A MEDAL BE STRUCK COMMEMORATIVE OF
THE EVENT AND TO CELEBRATE SUCH DISCOVERY:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
1. THAT THE YEAR 1969 BE AND IS HEREBY OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED
AS THE 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DISCOVERY OF CORPUS CHRISTI BAY, AND
2. THAT A MEDAL BE STRUCK IN KEEPING WITH THE DESIGN SUGGESTED
BY MRS. BARBARA RICO, SHOWING ON THE OBVERSE SIDE THEREOF TWO KARANKAWA
BRAVES, OF THE INDIAN TRIBE THEN INHABITING THE BAY AREA, PEERING FROM
A VANTAGE POINT ON PADRE ISLAND AS ONE OF THE FOUR SHIPS COMMANDED BY
PINEDA COMES INTO VIEW, AND THAT ON THE REVERSE SIDE BE SHOWN A RELIEF
MAP OF THE COAST OF THE GULF OF MEXICO FRAMING A WIND ROSE OF THE DESIGN
GENERALLY USED FOR NAVIGATION ON OR ABOUT THE YEAR OF SUCH DISCOVERY, AND
3. THAT ALL CITIZENS BE URGED TO OBSERVE THE SAID ANNIVERSARY
AND AID IN THE CIRCULATION OF SUCH COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL.
PASSED AND APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL THIS THE 30TH DAY OF
DECEMBER, 1969.

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing
ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspen-
sion of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall
be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or
resolution shall be read at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore,
request that you suspend jaid Charter rule or requirement and pass this ordi-
nance finally on the date it is introduced, or at the present meeting of the
City Council.
