HomeMy WebLinkAbout09599 RES - 01/07/1970A RESOLUTION RECOMMENDING TO THE STATE OF TEXAS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES STATE ARTIFACTS COMMITTEE, JOE SALEM, CHAIRMAN, A SITE AND BUILDING FOR THE PERMANENT DEPOSIT OF ALL SPANISH GALLEON ARTIFACTS SALVAGED FROM THE PADRE ISLAND AREA, WHEREAS, THE STATE OF TEXAS HAS, BY VARIOUS MEANS AND AGENCIES, AND AT VARIOUS TIMES, RECOVERED AND SALVAGED FROM SUNKEN SPANISH GALLEONS IN THE PADRE ISLAND AREA, NEAR THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, ARTIFACTS OF BOTH STATE AND NATIONAL HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE; AND WHEREAS, THERE HAS BEEN NO FINAL OFFICIAL DECISION BY THE STATE AS TO THE LOGICAL, PROPER, APPROPRIATE AND ECONOMICAL PLACE FOR THE PERMANENT DEPOSIT, DISPLAY, CARE AND STORAGE OF SAID ARTIFACTS, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: THAT IT IS HEREBY RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, AND WITH DEEPLY - FOUNDED CONVICTION URGED, AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION OF ALL PERTINENT FACTORS, SUCH AS PROXIMITY OF DEPOSIT - DISPLAY OF SALVAGED ARTIFACTS TO THE SITE OF WRECK AND RECOVERY, THE CENTURIES OF HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION LINKING THE PADRE ISLAND AREA SUNKEN GALLEONS AND THEIR CARGOES WITH THE SPECIAL, EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF THE COASTAL BEND, AND THE NEED FOR SAFE, SCIENTIFICALLY - CONTROLLED STORAGE AND DISPLAY OF SUCH ARTIFACTS TO ALL THE PUBLIC, THE SAID ARTIFACTS SHOULD, NATURALLY AND APPROPRIATELY, BE PLACED IN PERMANENT REPOSITORY IN THE CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM, AT CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS! AND THAT, IT IS FURTHER HEREBY RESPECTFULLY SUBMITTED, THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, AT ITS CURRENT AND PROJECTED RATES OF TOURISM, WILL ASSURE A RANGE AND FREQUENCY OF DISPLAY - VISITORS, AS TO SUCH ARTIFACTS, TO FULFILL THE NATURAL INTEREST OF ALL TEXANS IN SEEING THAT APPROPRIATE AND CONVEN- IENT ACCESS BE AVAILABLE AND THAT, THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI WILL PROVIDE, AT THE CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM A COMPLETELY ADEQUATE STAFF, FACILITIES AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR THE PRESERVATION, GUARDING AND DISPLAY, IN BEHALF OF ALL TEXANS, OF THESE FINE TREASURES FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO. 9599 PASSED AND APPROVED, THIS THE ZTH DAY OF JANUARY, 1970. ATTEST: Corpus Christi, as If— day of 19Q TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL Corpus Christi, Texas For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspen- sion of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore, request that you suspend jaid Charter rule or requirement and pass this ordi- nance finally on the date it is introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council.
