HomeMy WebLinkAbout11039 RES - 08/16/1972• /16/7p • s /16 /7z:let RESOLUTION FOR CITY COUNCIL CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI WHEREAS, Nueces County Navigation District No. 1 has requested of the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, that modifications to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel be made to accommodate VLCC's (very large crude carrier), OHO (oil -bulk ore) vessels and bulk carriers at the Corpus Christi Superport on Harbor Island, pursuant to a presentation made to the Corps of Engineers on April 24, 1972, and the Mayor and Councilmen of the City of Corpus Christi have reviewed the proposed plan and are desirous of expressing their opinions in relation theretol and WHEREAS, the Council is of the opinion that the plan will provide economical and efficient facilities to accommodate very large cargo carriers in the Corpus Christi area with a minimum of effect on the environment during construction and will provide marian3m protection for the environment after construction in that cargo handling facilities at Harbor Island will be located in relatively calm, nearly landlocked waters. This will permit spill boom encirclement of vessels while handling cargo and entrapment of spills by boom- ing between land areas should spills occurr and WHEREAS, the facilities are to be located in an area now devoted to navigation and handling petroleum cargo and will not result in a change of the use of that area; and WHEREAS, the proposed facilities will be capable of operation 365 days per year with no shutdowns because of heavy seas and is of such nature that it can be constructed in stage development, meeting the needs of commerce for Texas and the area as required, and further will provide deep draft cargo handling facilities in the Ingleside area when such facilities are neededi and WHEREAS, the proposed plan will cause less interference with the fishing industry and with other operations in the waters of the Gulf than the creation of facilities offshore in the Gulf of Mexicol and WHEREAS, the plan is compatible with the future growth and develop- ment of the City of Corpus Christi and the surrounding area and would be of benefit to the State of Texas and the citizens of this areal NOW, THEREFORE, HE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi approve the plans for development of large cargo carrying 1 n ®i. 9 •sRR.vEp • 8 /16 /72:lat facilities at Harbor Island and Ingleside, Texas, as presented by Nueces County Navigation District No. 1 to the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, on April 24, 1972, and recommends to the Corps of Engineers, U. S. Army, and to the Congress of the United States that the plan should be implemented at the earliest practicable opportunity.
