IN MEMORIAL OF THE PASSING OF LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON,
THE THIRTY -SIXTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA, IN CONDOLENCE TO HIS SURVIVING FAMILY, AND
IN OBSERVANCE OF NATIONAL MOURNING.
WHEREAS Lyndon Baines Johnson began his career of illustrious
public service in Corpus Christi as secretary to Congressman Richard M.
Kleberg more than thirty -eiglrt years ago; and
WHEREAS Lyndon Baines Johnson resided in Corpus Christi and estab-
lished his first home as the husband of Claudia Taylor in this city; and
WHEREAS Lyndon Baines Johnson maintained numerous friendships of

long- standing with citizens of Corpus Christi and often evidenced his special
regard for the city and its people; and

WHEREAS this most distinguished former resident manifested in his
strenuous life as teacher, aide, National Youth Administrator of Texas,
United States Representative for the Tenth Congressional District, Naval
Officer, United States Senator and Senate Majority Leader, vice President
of the United States of America, and President of the United States of
Ameri ^a zealous dedication to an eve.- greater society in this country, x '
rooted in his unswerving faith that A.ttericans, reasoning together, could
truly realize full lives as free men; and
WHEREAS in the Presidency Lyndon Baines Johnson presided over this
nation with a peerless knowledge of its government and a deep concern that
d history should record favorably the righteousness of that government's

actions in meeting its commitments at home and abroad; and
WHEREAS this Corpus Christian has, by his vision and driving energy,
lifted citizenship beyond geography, accident of birth, and level of estate,
to the end that disadvantaged persons everywhere have new hope and oppor-
tunity; and
WHEREAS his monumental work has, in large measure, become a
sacrifice for his countrymen, a legacy to mankind, and a cause of his
untimely death;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
That this resolution go forth in memorial of Lyndon Baines Johnson,
in profound appreciation of his many services to his country and his fellow
man;

That this resolution be conveyed to the widow, Claudia Taylor
Johnson, as condolence of the City of Corpus Christi to all the surviving
family of her beloved husband;
That this resolution be recorded in observance of the national
mourning of the death of Lyndon Baines Johnson and as a call to the
inhabitants of the city to join in mourning this staunch friend and old
neighbor.

SION AF THE CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT THAT NO ORDINANCE OR RESOLUTION SHALL
BE PASSED FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCEDy AND THAT SUCH ORDINANCE OR
RESOLUTION SHALL BE READ AT THREE MEETINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL; Ii THEREFOREI
REQUEST THAT YOU SUSPEND SAID CHARTER RULE OR REQUIREMENT AND PASS THIS ORDI-
NANCE FINALLY ON THE DATE IT IS INTRODUCED, OR AT THE PRESENT MEETING OF THE
CITY COUNCIL.
