HomeMy WebLinkAbout11366 RES - 03/21/1973JRf2/FIG ✓LIC 2/23/73 A .RESOLUTION DECLARING THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI SUPPORTS THE PROVISIONS OF ARTICLE 6252 -17; V.A.C.S., "THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW "; DECLARING INTENT TO FULLY COMPLY WITH STATE LAW TO THE END THAT THE CITIZENS OF THIS CITY MAY BE FULLY INFORMED OF THE ACTIONS OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND DECLARING THAT EVEN THOSE MEETINGS ALLOWED TO BE CLOSED UNDER LAW ARE DECLARED TO BE AND SHALL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. WHEREAS, THE TEXAS STATE LEGISLATURE SITTING IN 1967 AS THE 60TH LEGISLATURE PASSED ARTICLE 6252 -17, V.A.C.S., KNOWN GENERALLY AS THE "OPEN MEETINGS LAW" TO PROVIDE FOR OPEN MEETINGS OF GOVERNMENTAL BODIES AND FOR NOTICE OF SAID MEETINGS; AND WHEREAS, SAID STATUTE WAS AMENDED BY THE 61ST LEGISLATURE IN 1969, AND IN THE CURRENT LEGISLATIVE SESSION THERE ARE A NUMBER OF BILLS PENDING TO FURTHER CLARIFY AND EXTEND THE PROVISIONS RELATING TO OPEN MEETINGS; AND WHEREAS, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, SUPPORTS THE CJNCEPT OF OPEN MEETINGS AND HAS CONSCIENTIOUSLY ENDEAVORED TO COMPLY WITH THE SPIRIT AND THE LETTER OF THE "OPEN MEETINGS LAW" SO THAT THE CITIZENS ARE FULLY INFORMED OF THE ACTIONS OF THE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES ON THE CITY COUNCIL; AND WHEREAS, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI FINDS THAT THE HOLDING OF OPEN MEETINGS IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE PUBLIC, IS CON- SISTENT WITH THE CONCEPTS OF FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY OF THIS COUNTRY AND THE J COUNCIL FULLY SUPPORTS THE PROPOSITION THAT THE CITIZENS SHOULD BE FULLY INFORMED OF THE ACTIONS OF THEIR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TO INSURE THAT THE CITIZENS OF THIS COMMUNITY SHALL BE FULLY INFORMED, HEREBY DECLARES ALL MEETINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, INCLUDING THCSE MEETINGS ALLOWED BY LAW TO BE CLOSED, AND REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT TO THE RIGHT OF THE CITIZENS TO BEFULLY INFORMED OF THE ACTIONS OF THEIR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES. -Y�USS r THAT THE FOREGOING ORDINANCE WAS READ FOR THE FIRST T'14E AND PASSED TO I TS SECOND FiEAD I NO ON T111 5 THE DAY OFL_� �� BY THE FOLLOWING VOTE: - RONNIE SIZEMORE CHARLES A.
