HomeMy WebLinkAbout11548 ORD - 07/03/1973JRR:vp:6 /19 /73:lst I _ , AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 9864 PASSED AND APPROVED ON JULY 29, 1970s SO AS TO PROVIDE A FARE OF 15¢ FOR PASSENGERS OVER 65 YEARS OF AGE UPON PRESENTA- TION OF A MEDICARE CARD OR SPECIAL IDENTIFICATION CARD TO BE ISSUED AT NO COST TO A PERSON PROVIDING EVIDENCE OF AGE TO THE TRANSIT OFFICE; PROVIDING FOR THE ELIMINATION OF ADDITIONAL ZONE FARES FOR THE CLASS ESTABLISHED HEREIN; PROVIDING FOR PUBLI- CATION; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 9864, passed and approved by the City Council on July 29, 1970, in effect set the schedule of motor bus rates; and WHEREAS, said schedule did not make provision for the fact that most citizens 65 years of age and older subsist on a limited fixed sum retire- ment income; and , WHEREAS, the increasing cost of living and increased inflation con- stantly erode the buying power of those citizens subsisting on limited fixed sum income; and WHEREAS, such conditions cause a severe economic burden on a segment of the community that contributed much to the economic well -being of the City and who over the years have produced substantial tax revenue to the support of running City government; and WHEREAS, the City Council hereby finds the above conditions to exist and to warrant the granting of a reduced fare to those citizens 65 years of age or older: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the aforesaid Ordinance No. 9864,4be, and�the same a , is hereby, amended so as to add a new Subsection (6) to Paragraph (A) of Section 2 thereof, said new Subsection to read as f6llows: "(6) For passengers 65 years or older, upon presentation of a Medi- Care card or special identification card, the fare shall be fifteen cents (150). If a person 65 years of age or older does not have a Medicare card, then a special identification card will be issued to that person at no cost, upon appearing in person at the Transit Office and providing evidence of age. For the purposes of the class of fare established in this Subsection (6), the additional zone fares are eliminated. -f SECTION 2. If for any reason any section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance shall be held invalid or unconstitutional by final judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction, it shall not affect any other section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance, for it is the definite intent of this City Council that every section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or provision hereof be given full force and effect for its purpose. SECTION 3• The fares established by this ordinance shall become effective on , 1973• SECTION 4.
