A RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE TESAS ANTIQUITIES CAF TO
DESIGNATE THE CORPUS CHRISTI MUSEUM AS THE
DEPOSITORY FOR THE SPANISH GALLEON ARTIFACTS
FOUND OFF PADRE ISLAND; AUTHORIZING AND DIRECT-
ING THE CITY SECRETARY TO FORWARD A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO TE US ANTIQUITIES COMMITTEE; AND
DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi has
heretofore passed and approved on January S, 1970, Resolution No. 9599,
recommending to the State of Texas Rouse of Representatives State Arti-
facts Committee a site and building for the permanent deposit of all
Spanish galleon artifacts salvaged from the Padre Island area near Corpus
Christi; and
Ti>dD;RREAS, the City Council of the City of Corpus Christi
recognizes and appreciates the dedicated professional competency of
the staff of Dr. Dee Ann Story of the University of Texas at Austin and
the unique qualifications of her staff which works on the preservation
of locally dredged coastal historical artifacts; and
WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes that this program of
preservation of such historical artifacts is an integral part of the
scientific research of the staff and graduate students of the University
of Texas; and
WHYS, the University of Texas has gone to great expense in
setting up facilities for the correct treatment of these artifacts and
the City Council gladly agrees that all work on preservation and basic
research should continue to be done by the competent staff of the University
of Texas; and
WHEREAS, the Corpus Christi Museum is the only qualified
professional museum in the area of said dredging and can offer storage,
protection and maintenance of all such specimens furnished by the University
of Texas; and
WHEREAS, such collection together with its future additions
constitutes a most unique time capsule of great significance to the history
of North America and should return to the area where it was found, always

remain in competent hands and always remain the property of the State
of Texas;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City
of Corpus Christi;
SECTION 1. That the Texas Antiquities Committee be and the
same is hereby requested to designate the Corpus Christi,Museum as the
depository for the Spanish galleon artifacts found off Padre Island, Texas.
That the Corpus Christi Museum, with its staff, will provide to the State
storage, protection and maintenance of all specimens so furnished by the
University of Texas as the only qualified professional museum in the area
of the dredging. That such artifacts shall remain the property of the
State of Texas. That the Corpus Christi Museum will provide sufficient
display area, using all modern and up to date display techniques so that
all Texans in perpetuity and in particular the Texans residing in the area
where such artifacts were found, in perpetuity, may view these displays
without paying admission and in comfortable and pleasant surroundings.
That the Corpus Christi Museum will store duplicate specimens in a study
collection which will be accessible to all serious professionals, as
designated by the Texas Antiquities Committee. That the Corpus Christi
Museum will construct traveling exhibits to be displayed at the pleasure
of the Texas Antiquities Committee in other competent museums in the State
of Texas and throughout the nation as approved by said Committee.
SECTION 2. That the City Secretary is hereby authorized and
directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the Texas
Antiquities Committee at Austin, Texas.
SECTION 3. The necessity to request the designation of the
Corpus Christi Museum as the depository for the Spanish galleon artifacts
found on Padre Island creates a public emergency and an imperative public
necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance
or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction and
that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings
of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared such emergency and
necessity to exist, and having requested the suspension of the Charter
rule and that this resolution be passed finally on the date of its

For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing
ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspen-
sion of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall
be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or
resolution shall be read at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore,
request that you suspend said Charter rule or requirement and pass this ordi-
nance finally on the date it is introduced, or at the present meeting of the
City Council.
