HomeMy WebLinkAbout12188 RES - 07/24/1974SRR:MLM:hb:lst:7 /24/74 • is A RESOLUTION WHEREAS the increasing cost of gas produced and sold within the state of Texas is adversely affecting both the consumer and industry, and WHEREAS the south Texas area is not in a position to change in a short —time frame from dependence on natural gas to other fuels as might be possible in other areas within the United States and, WHEREAS natural gas in Texas is not available for open market purchase because of existing long term contracts previously entered into by various suppliers, and WHEREAS the Congress is empowered to exercise control of the allocation and pricing of natural gas which affects interstate commerce, NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi hereby urges the Congress of the United States to take such constitutional and legal measures as may be necessary to maintain and insure the equitable allocation and price of natural gas to remove the imbalance as currently exists between gas sold intrastate and gas sold interstate. SECTION 2. The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi hereby urges the Congress of the United States to place a responsibility on carriers of interstate natural gas to sell a reasonable amount of natural gas intrastate prior to the entry of natural gas produced in Texas in interstate commerce. SECTION 3. The imperative public necessity to immediately urge the Congress of the United States to take such constitutional and legal measures as may be necessary to meet the critical gas supply problem in the State and in this City creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor, having declared such 121-88 emergency and necessity to exist, having requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this resolution take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO RESOLVED this the /�ay of July, 1974.
