- MLM:Jkh:4 -7 -75; 1st AN ORDINANCE CALLING AN ELECTION FOR MAYOR AND SIX (6) COUNCIL MEMBERS IN THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI TO BE HELD ON THE FIRST SATURDAY IN MAY, 1975; DESIGNATING PLACES OF HOLDING SUCH ELECTION; NAMING THE OFFICERS THEREFOR; PRESCRIBING THE FORM OF NOTICE OF ELECTION, AND ENACTING PROVISIONS INCIDENT AND RELATING TO THE SUBJECT AND PURPOSE OF THIS ORDINANCE; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, the City Charter provides for the holding of a regular City election for Mayor and six (6) Council members in the City of Corpus Christi, on the first Saturday in odd - numbered years, the same being May 3, 1975; and WHEREAS, it is provided in Article 4.06 of the Texas State Election Code that the governing bodies shall order elections pertaining to municipal affairs, give notice upon the election of officers to hold the election: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That a regular City election for the election of Mayor and six (6) Council members, in the City of Corpus Christi, shall be held in the City of Corpus Christi on May 3, 1975. SECTION 2. That at said election herein ordered all the quali- fied voters of the City of Corpus Christi shall be permitted to vote. SECTION 3. That the names of candidates for the office of Mayor and the names of candidates for the office of the City Council members shall be placed on.said ballot in the manner and form prescribed by law. SECTION 4. The presiding judges shall be authorized to select such clerks or other assistants provided by law, and as may be deemed necessary, and said election shall be held in accordance with the general election laws of the State of Texas. The polls shall be open from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., on the date of the said election. Absentee voting shall be conducted by the City Secretary at his office in the City Hall, and the results canvassed and returns made as is provided by law. A substantial copy of this ordinance, signed by the Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi, attested by the City Secretary, shall constitute due notice of said general election, and the Mayor is hereby authorized and directed to cause a copy of this ordinance signed by him to be posted at the City Hall and each of the voting places in each of the election precincts not less than twenty (20) days prior to said election, and to cause a copy of this ordinance signed by him to be published in the Corpus Christi Times, the official newspaper, being a newspaper in general circulation, published in the City of Corpus Christi, said publication to be made on the same day of two successive weeks prior to the *late of election, the date.of the first publication to be not less than twenty (20) days prior to the date of said election. -4- Corpus Christi, Texas Od day of , 19j,�7 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL Corpus Christi, Texas For the reasons set forth in the emergency clause of the foregoing ordinance, a public emergency and imperative necessity exist for the suspen- sion of the Charter rule or requirement that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date it is introduced, and that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three meetings of the City Council; I, therefore, request that you suspend said Charter rule or requirement and pass this ordi- nance finally on the date it is introduced, or at the present meeting of the City Council. The fact that it is necessary and essential that the governing body of the City of Corpus Christi shall order elections pertaining to municipal affairs and that the notice of such election should be promptly posted and that a regular city election for the election of the Mayor and six Council members in the City of Corpus Christi shall be held on the first Saturday in May, 1975, creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordi- nance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction but that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, having requested the suspension of the said Charter rule and that this ordinance be passed finally on the date of its introduction and take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO ORDAINED, this the 9th day of April, 1975.
