HomeMy WebLinkAbout13185 RES - 05/19/1976A RESOLUTION 10HEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi is celebrating the Bicentennial ' � a of our nation through many festive events; and WHEREAS, the City Council is cognizant of the desire of many of ~ its citizens to mark the moment in. history when our nation passes into its third century; and , !IHEREAS, the Bost Reverend Thomas J. Drury, Bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, wishes to initiate "Freedom Bells '76 ", a project proposed to him by Raymond A. Rodriguez on January 28, 1976 to mark the influence f of religion on the making of our nation; and WHEREAS, the "Church Bell Ringing" of July 4, 1976, has become f a national project, of interest to all faiths, Catholic, Protestant and ` Jewish, and will mark the influence of-religion and spirtual values on the making of our nation: ' dw NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF 11 CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: J ` SECTION 1. Recognizing that "Freedom Bells '76" is a five (5) minute nationwide tolling of the bells. The, first two (2) minutes in commemoration of our 200th Anniversary, and three (3) minutes signifying �. the role which our three (3) major faiths - Catholic, Protestant, and y Jewish have played in the making of our nation. SECTION 2. "Freedom Bells '76" shall ring- Sunday,`, July 4, 1976, at exactly 2:00 P.M. EDST in accordance with the guidelines enacted by 4 r congressional resolution for the nationwide bell ringing activity and ;. endorsed by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. The bell + rI• t ringing will be followed by songs of our nation - a medly of joyful chimes on this commemorative day. SECTION73. A true copy of this resolution shall be forwarded t L• ' to the appropriate representatives of the three major faiths, Catholic, Protestant and 4Jeewish,' „so that the resolve and intent expressed herein ' A e ' MVII_W FILMED Al JUN 161980 shall be all encompassing, and a copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the National Council of Catholic Bishops, the ten (10) Catholic Episcopal Sees in the State -of Texas, the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, and all other appropriate and interested religious denominations, thus encompassing the entire nation. SECTION 4. "Freedom Bells '76" will signify our entrance into the third century and will give "us pause to reflect on our blessings, our runity, our religion and'to rededicate ourselves to those lofty patriotic ideals so avidly advocated by our founding fathers.
