HomeMy WebLinkAbout13648 RES - 02/23/1977• • A RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Mrs. Ada Rogers Wilson, a long -time resident and widely known philanthropist, was on February 16, 1977, called to her eternal rest; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Ada Wilson, wife of the late Sam E. Wilson, Jr., was well known as a dedicated citizen of her community, and will be remembered in Corpus Christi as a business, social and cultural leader who was the founder and sponsor of the Cotillion Clubs in the City and was one of the organizers and supporters of Las Donas de la Corte, sponsors of the annual Buccaneer Days pageant; and WHEREAS, among the many accomplishments for which Mrs. Wilson will be remembered are the following: she was founder and principal benefactor of the Ada Wilson Hospital of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; she conveyed most of her holdings on Mustang Island to the State of Texas for what is now Mustang Island State Park, to be enjoyed by the public for many years; she was an avid supporter of the Naval Air Station in the City; she contributed generous sums to almost every charity in the City and to numerous organizations, among those being the Corpus Christi.Area Tourist Bureau, for assistance in construction of its building which opened in 1974, and the USO facilities at Flour Bluff, and the West Oso High School Stage Band toward its European Tour in 1974; and she shared her extensive collection of treasures by loaning much of the collection to the Japanese Art Museum for a special exhibit; and • WHEREAS, Mrs. Ada Wilson was the recipient of many awards, including the Maltese Cross in recognition of her charitable contribu- tions, she being one of only three women in 700 years to receive this distinguished award; recognition in 1976 by the local chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews who conferred upon her the Brotherhood Honors Award; and recognition in 1976 of her contribution to the Ada Wilson Hospital of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation MICROFILMED JUL 0 71980 13648 • • during special fund - raising reception at which time the "Ruby of Mercy" was displayed, the precious gem having been carved with a likeness of Mrs. Wilson and that of a crippled child; and WHEREAS, her vast knowledge and generous contributions to the community have benefited innumerable people, and her passing is a great loss to the citizens of the City of Corpus Christi as well as to her family and many friends, leaving an irreplaceable void in the community: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That this brief record of the many accomplishments of Mrs. Ada Rogers Wilson be recalled and that the citizens of this community join in mourning the loss of this valuable citizen. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Ada Rogers Wilson. PASSED AND APPROVED, this the 23rd day of February, 1977. During the Regular Council Meeting of February 23, 1977, Mayor and Council unanimously passed the attached Resolution :' And,while it's merely a combination and assimilation of words; we hope it will somehow - express to you the_feelings that we all share and the 100 and respect in which your Mother.vas reverend by our citizens.''
