HomeMy WebLinkAbout13699 RES - 03/16/1977• MLM:e:3 /16/77 A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SUPPORT OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI FOR PASSAGE OF HOUSE BILL NUMBER 1 OR SIMILAR LEGISLA- TION; INSTRUCTING THE CITY SECRETARY TO FORWARD A TRUE COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO SENATOR CARLOS TRUAN, THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, GOVERNOR DOLPH BRISCOE, AND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR WILLIAM P. HOBBY; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. • WHEREAS, House Bill Number l,originally filed by Representatives Wyatt and Allen, which relates to the reduction of certain taxes on gas and electricity for residential use, has been brought forward; and WHEREAS, the price of utilities for residential users has caused undue hardship which is beyond the financial capacity of many families; and WHEREAS, the proposed legislation as expressed in House Bill Number 1 would provide a measure of relief for those persons distressed by unreasonable utility costs: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Corpus Christi hereby expresses its wholehearted support for the reduction of certain taxes on residential gas and electricity use and urges the Texas State Legislature to pass House Bill Number 1 or similar legislation. SECTION 2. The City Secretary is hereby instructed to furnish a true copy of this resolution to Senator Carlos Truan, The Chairman and.members of the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Governor Dolph Briscoe, Lieutenant Governor William P. Hobby. SECTION 3. The necessity to reduce as much and as quickly as possible the cost of electricity and gas for the residential user creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule MICROFILMED, 13699 JUr 0 71980 that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its introduction but that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, having requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this resolution take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO RESOLVED, this the 16th day of March, 1977.
