HomeMy WebLinkAbout14342 RES - 05/31/1978• JKH:ya:5- 31- 78:lst r A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING WHOLEHEARTED ENDORSEMENT OF THE PADRE ISLAND CHALLENGE CUP TENNIS TOURNAMENT AND ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT OF THIS SIGNIFICANT COASTAL BEND ATHLETIC EVENT; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, the City of Corpus Christi supports and encourages all of its citizens to participate in and enjoy the sport of Tennis; and WHEREAS, the City realizes the need for National and Interna- tional competition in the sport of Tennis and recognizes the community good will to be gained by sponsorship of this type of event; and WHEREAS, the City recognizes the beneficial economic impact to the community resulting from advertising and sponsoring this event; and WHEREAS, an event similar to the Padre Island Challenge Cup Tennis Tournament was sponsored last year and met with noteworthy success in participation and national recognition; and WHEREAS, tennis organizations in the countries of Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and the United States have indicated their wishes to participate in the Padre Island InUrnational Challenge Cup Tennis Tournament, scheduled / /3 �_ for October I fJ 5 ; 1978 at the Padre Isles Country Club; K NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That said City Council hereby expresses its whole- s hearted endorsement of the Padre Island International Challenge Cup Tennis Tournament and encourages community participation in and support of this significant Coastal Bend athletic event. , SECTION 2. The City Secretary is hereby instructed to send copies of this resolution to the Corpus Christi Tennis Association and other sponsors of the Tournament. •SECTION 3. The fact that the City Council desires to express its endorsement of the Padre Island Challenge Cup creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its i introduction but that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three MICROFILMED_ J,U,L 6 � 14342 several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, and having requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this resolution take effect and be in full force and effect from and after i s passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY SO RESOLVED, this the 31 day of 1978.
