AN ORDINANCE
AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, CITY OF CORPUS
CHRISTI, 1976 REVISION, AS AMENDED, BY AMENDING
SECTION 55 -5, CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM -- FARES, BY AMENDING
PARAGRAPH (A), SUBPARAGRAPHS (5), (6)
AND (7), AND BY ADDING SUBPARAGRAPHS (8) AND (9) SO
AS TO ESTABLISH NEW FARE RATES, AND BY AMENDING PARA
GRAPH (D) TO AMEND THE ZONE DESCRIPTIONS; PROVIDIPG
FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING FOR PUBLICATION; PRO-
VIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Ordinances No. 9864, 12855, and 14285, passed and
approved by the City Council established a system of rates and zones for
fixed -route City bus service; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that a 35 -cent base
fare for adult transit riders is necessary; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that a simplified rate
structure and zone system is essential; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that the establishment
of rates for express bus service is essential; and
WHEREAS, the City Council finds that the hereinafter prescribed
rates are reasonable, just and fair, and in the public interest:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the Code of Ordinances, City of Corpus Christi,
1976 Revision, as amended, be amended by amending Section 55 -5, City Transit
System -- Fares, by amending paragraphs A, subparagraphs (1), (2), (3), (5),
(6), and (7), and by adding subparagraphs (8) and (9) so as to establish
new fare rates, and to amend paragraph (D) to amend the zone descriptions
to hereafter provide as follows:
(A) City Transit System Fixed -Route Service
(1) All riders originating in one zone and terminating in
the same zone without having traveled in any other
zone shall pay the base fare of thirty -five cents
the C City Transit System. Tokens oort tickets sshall bbe
sold at the rate of five (5) for one dollar and fifty
cents ($1.50).
(2) For children from their 5th to their 12th birthdays,
all riders originating in one zone and terminating
in the same zone without having traveled in any
other zone, the rate shall be 174. For children's

another zone only one -half the zone charge as
provided for in Section 2 (A) (8) shall be paid
In addition to the base fare.
(3) For students, regardless of age, in actual attendance
at any academic or public or private school of grades
not higher than the public high school of the City of
Corpus Christi, between the hours of 7:00 A.M. to
6:00 P.M., regular cash fare shall be charged as
in (A) (1) above or by showing a schoollpass approved
by the Transit System.
School passes shall be valid for 20 rides and sold
for $3.50. Provided however, for a trip on a school
pass there shall be no additional charge or fare
for crossing any number of zones.
(5) Transfers shall be issued to all patrons so desiring,
between all routes, without additional charge; pro-
vided that the transfer shall not be valid on the
route of issue unless designated by the Transit System.
(6) For passengers 65 years or older and for handicapped r
persons, upon presentation of a Medicare card or
special identification card, the fare shall be 15@
"for_the first zone and 50 for any ride involving more
than one zone. If a person 65 years of age or older
does not have a Medicare card, then a special identi-
fication card will be issued to that person at no
cost, upon appearing in person at the Transit Office
and providing evidence of age. If a handicapped
person does not have a special identification card,
then one will be issued to that person at no cost,
by the Transit Office, upon certification by a doctor
or by a community agency which serves the handicapped
to the effect that the person is handicapped. For
the purposes of this ordinance, "handicapped person"
shall be defined as an individual who, by reason of
a permanent physical disability or incapacity, is
unable to utilize mass transit services without special
assistance.
(7) All persons enrolled in the Youth Services Program
administered by the Corpus Christi Independent School
District shall be entitled to ride the transit system
buses by presenting to the driver a special Youth
Services Program pass.
Youth Services Program passes shall be valid for 20
rides and sold for $3.50. Provided however, for a
trip on a Youth Services Program pass there shall
be no additional charge or fare for crossing any
number of zones.
(8) Passengers making trips originating in one zone
and terminating in another zone shall be charged
100 for each zone line crossed in addition to the
base fare.
Zones for the purpose of this regulation are defined
in paragraph D of this section.
(9) Passengers making trips on express bus service shall
pay a premium fare of not less than 50� nor more than
$1.00, depending upon the length of the trip.
Express bus rates by distance are shown in the
following table.

(D) Zones
Zones shall consist of circles, having as common centers
the intersection of the centerlines of Chaparral and
Lawrence Streets. The first zone shall have a radius
of approximately 5 miles, constituting zone one. Successive
concentric circles, having the aforesaid center as a common
center, of five -mile (approximately) radius increments,
shall constitute the outer zones, appearing and designated
by zone numbers as shown on the map annexed hereto,
designated "Exhibit A" and by-this reference incorporated
herein and made a part hereof.
SECTION 2. If for any reason, any section, paragraph, sub-
division, clause, phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance shall be held
invalid or unconstitutional by final judgment of a court of competent juris-
diction, it shall not affect any other section, paragraph, subdivision, clause,
phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance for it is the definite intent of
this City Council that every section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase,
word or provision hereof be given full force and effect for its purpose.
SECTION 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict
herewith be and the same are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION 4. This ordinance shall be effective September 1, 1978.
SECTION 5. Publication shall be made one time in the official
publication of the City of Corpus Christi, by publishing the caption of this
ordinance, stating in substance the purpose of the ordinance.
