HomeMy WebLinkAbout14953 ORD - 06/13/1979JKH:rr:6-1'.-79 • or, AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, 1976 REVISION, AS AMENDED, BY AMENDING SECTION 55-5, CITY TRANSIT SYSTEM -FARES, BY AMENDING PARAGRAPH (A) BY ADDING SUBPARAGRAPHS (10) AND (11) SO AS TO PROVIDE FOR THE SALE OF PASSES AND TO PROVIDE FREE OR REDUCED RATE TRANSIT RIDES FOR MARKETING PURPOSES; PROVIDING FOR SEVER- ABILITY; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE ; AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, Ordinances No. 9864, 12855, 14285, and 14476 passed and approved by the City Council established a system of rates and zones for fixed -route City bus service; and WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that the use of passes on the transit system will make riding easier for many citizens, thus encouraging its use; and WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that in order to encourage additional use of the transit system it is necessary to offer free or reduced rate rides as special promotions. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS: SECTION 1. That the Code of Ordinances, City of Corpus Christi, 1976 Revision, as amended, be amended by amending Section 55-5, City Transit System -Fares, by amending paragraph A, by adding subparagraphs (10) and (11) so as to authorize the sale of passes and to authorize special transit promotions. These subparagraphs to hereafter provide as follows: (A) City Transit System Fixed -Route Service (10) The City Transit System is authorized to sell, with the approval of the city Manager, special punch -type passes which would be valid for a predetermined number of rides within the first zone (or to other zones with the payment of a zone fare) at a rate to be no higher or lower than the unit rate at which tokens are sold. Such a pass would be valid during all normal transit system operating hours. (11) The City Transit System, with the approval of the City Manager, is authorized to offer free or reduced price transit rides on a limited basis through the use of free or reduced price tickets, coupons, special passes, tokens or other methods of identification in an effort to promote the use and understanding of the transit system. 14953 • MICROFILMED JUL 08!980 • • SECTION 2. If for any reason, any section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word, or provision of this ordinance shall be held invalid or unconstitutional by final judgment of a court of competent jurisdiction, it shall not affect any other section, paragraph, subdivision, clause, phrase, word or provision hereof be given full force and effect for its purpose. SECTION 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflic here- with be and the same are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. SECTION 4. This ordinance shall become effective immediately upon passage. SECTION 5. The necessity to immediately authorize the pro- motion of transit services creates a public emergency and an imperative public necessity requiring the suspension of the Charter rule that no ordinance or resolution shall be passed finally on the date of its intro- duction, but that such ordinance or resolution shall be read at three several meetings of the City Council, and the Mayor having declared such emergency and necessity to exist, and having requested the suspension of the Charter rule and that this ordinance be passed finally on the date of its introduction and take effect and be in full force and effect from and after its passage, IT IS ACCORDINGLY OS ORDAINED, this the /3 day of ATTEST: , 1979.
