AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI,
SECTION 6-10 - LICENSING, BY INCREASING THE ANNUAL LICENSE
FEE FOR EACH DOG OR CAT NOT SPAYED OR NEUTERED FROM $8.00
TO $10.00 EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 1, 1997; AND PROVIDING FOR
PUBLICATION.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS:
SECTION 1. That the Corpus Christi Code of Ordinances, Chapter 6, Animal Control,
Section 6-10 is hereby amended to increase the annual license fee for each dog or cat not spayed or
neutered from $8.00 to $10.00, effective September 1, 1997.
Sec. 6-10. Licensing.
(a) Required It shall be unlawful for any person to own, keep, harbor or have custody or
control of any dog or cat over three (3) months of age within the city without first obtaining
a valid license for each such dog or cat as herein provided.
(b) Application; prerequisites. Written application for licenses and payment of the applicable
license fees shall be made to the collection section, animal control, or participating
veterinarians. The application shall include the name and address of the applicant, a
description of the animal, and a currently valid rabies certificate issued by a licensed
veterinarian.
(c) Fee. The annual license fee shall be as follows:
(1) Each spayed or neutered dog or cat .... $3.00
(2) Each dog or cat not spayed or neutered ....-8.00 10.00
No fee shall be charged for a license issued for any dog actually used by a blind or deaf
person to aid such person in going from place to place.
Participating veterinarians will be rebated one dollar ($1.00) for each license they issue if the
duplicate copy of the license/ vaccination certificate is submitted to the animal control
division within thirty (30) days of issuance.
(d) Term. If not revoked, such license shall be effective for a period of one year from the date
of vaccination. Application for license renewal may be made any time within a thirty -day

period prior to the expiration date of the license.
(e) When to apply. Application for a license must be made within thirty (30) days after
obtaining a dog or cat over three (3) months of age, except that this requirement will not
apply to a nonresident individual keeping a dog or cat within the city for no longer than sixty
(60) days.
(1) Issuance of tag. Upon acceptance of the dog or cat license application, the animal control
supervisor or delegated veterinarian shall issue a durable license tag, stamped with an
identifying number and the year of issuance. Tags shall be designed so that they may be
conveniently fastened or riveted to the animal's collar or harness.
(g) Wearing of tag; replacement fee. Dogs and cats must wear license tags at all times. A
duplicate license tag may be obtained upon payment of a two -dollar ($2.00) replacement fee.
(h) Nontransferable. No person may use any license for any animal other than the animal for
which it was issued.
(i) Records. The animal control supervisor shall cause to be maintained a current record
disclosing serial numbers of dog and cat licenses and license tags issued, and the names and
addresses of persons to whom the same are issued.
(j) Reduced fee during pet health campaigns. The city manager is hereby authorized to
temporarily reduce charges for animal licenses as part of community -wide licensing and
vaccination campaigns in conjunction with the Coastal Bend Veterinary Medical Association
to increase the awareness of the need for pet vaccinations and licenses.
(k) Dangerous dog license tag. A dog found to be a "dangerous dog" as defined by Chapter
822, Health and Safety Code, shall wear a dangerous dog license tag issued by the animal
control division upon a payment of fifty dollars ($50.00) license registration fee. Such
dangerous dog license tag shall be worn by the dangerous dog attached to a lime green
colored, one- inch -wide collar. In addition, the owner of a dangerous dog shall present proof
of the secure enclosure in which the dog shall be kept, proof of liability insurance coverage
or financial responsibility in an amount of at least one hundred thousand dollars
($100,000.00) to cover damages resulting from an attack and proof of compliance with other
conditions as may be required pursuant to Chapter 822, Health and Safety Code.
SECTION 2. Publication will be made one time in the official publication of the City of
Corpus Christi by publishing the caption stating in substance the purpose of the ordinance. This
ordinance will be effective on September 1, 1997.
