REQUESTING THAT THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
DISTRICTS WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS OF THE CITY OF
CORPUS CHRISTI CONSIDER NAMING A NEW PUBLIC
SCHOOL FOR FORMER MAYOR MARY RHODES
WHEREAS, on June 17, 1997, Mayor Loyd Neal established the Mary Rhodes Memorial
Committee to solicit citizen input and recommend appropriate memorials to honor the distinguished
and selfless service of Mary Rhodes to the citizens of Corpus Christi as Mayor from 1991 to 1997,
and as Council Member, Planning Commission Member, and community leader prior to that; anti-. _
WHEREAS, Mary Rhodes was deeply committed to the promotion and education of our
youth, and the Committee received numerous expressions of support for naming a school after her;
and
WHEREAS, the Committee strongly recommended in its report to the City Council on
September 23, 1997, that the Council pass a resolution requesting that the independent school
districts within the city limits consider naming a new public school for Mary Rhodes.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. The Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, West Oso, Tuloso-Midway, and Calallen
Independent School Districts are requested to consider naming a newly constructed public school
for former Mary Rhodes.
SECTION 2. The City Secretary is directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the Board
of Trustees of each independent school district within the city limits of the City of Corpus Christi.
