S.Business for Discussion and Possible Action:
A. Laurie Turner introduction as new committee member.
Laurie was introduced to the Committee.
B. Pride Club Update—Christina, Iris and guest Kimberly Bissell
NOTE: KimberIv Bissell did not attend the meeting.
Christina and Iris led a discussion about the creation of mascot costume to be Nvorn by committee
members in schools. Funding for such a costume can come from the Solid Waste Department's
education budget. The committee leaned toNvards adopting Picky Pete mascot instead of developing a
new mascot. Christina Nvill join Bob in discussing this issue at the March 6 meeting Nvith Mayor
Martinez.
C. TAMU-CC Dav of Giving—Bob
As a"thank vou"for efforts in support of their Homecoming Week, the school Nvill be making
volunteers available for Pride-related projects during their Big Event on March 29. There Nvill be
several projects at the Garcia Center and one doN-,ntoN-,n. There Nvas a discussion of possibly
supporting PRIDE Club but the idea Nvas dropped when it Nvas determined that there Nvasn't enough
time to organize and that the event Nvould take place when school Nvasn't in session.
D. Green and Clean ANvard March plans—Oscar
The new process of using Council meetings to present awards has been very successful. HoNvever, Nve
continue to scramble getting Nvorthy recipients identified and on some kind of schedule. Bob Nvill send
our list of possible recipients to Jeff and Oscar and the three of them Nvill each take a third of the
nominees and vet them.
E. Agnes-Laredo corridor revitalization update—Bob/Russell
Corpus Christi Police and Code officers Nvill respond to ovmers of unmaintained buildings/property
Nvhen they are notified of them. The Interdepartmental Nuisance Abatement Team or INAT initiative
to address vacant, problem buildings comes into play Nvhen regular code-enforcement efforts fail.
Russell updated the committee on the status of Dr. Ramirez's request to create a community garden
on City property near the Antonio E. Garcia Arts Center. The property is ovmed by Parks and
Recreation, there should be no problem Nvith the center using the land for that purpose and she has
been provided appropriate contact information.
F. New Process for posting meeting minutes–Bob/Russell
Russell Neill email approved and draft minutes to entire committee.
G. Goodwill Industries request and our response to future requests—Frank
Frank Nvas approached by Goodwill for assistance for an event but Nvas unsure as to the committee's
policy on participating in events and Nvhether Nve had the materials (brochures, t-shirts, etc.)to hand
out. The committee decided that they should assist in future events, possibly attend events in a Picky
Pete costume and so on.
To develop the materials needed to be a credible presence in community events, Bill motioned for the
creation of a"Community Outreach Committee."Bob Copes seconded and the committee approved
its creation.. Bill Nvill lead this committee, which Nvill include Paul, Iris, Frank, Jeff and Bob. Bill Nvill
coordinate an initial meeting of this committee. This group Nvill supersede the Media Relations
Committee Nvhich had been suggested previously. We Nvill look for an upcoming event to launch this
effort.
In addition, Bill asked whether our use of social media could be more strategic. Bob Neill provide a
previous Nvorking document on the Pride Committee's use of Facebook as a starting point.
