DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Mr. Beynon reported a decrease in the number of
dogs impounded due to a decreased number of bite cases and an
increased number of trap pickups--about 25 of calls are for trap
pickups . Investigations and citation revenues have increased. A
record high number of opossums were euthanized for unknown reasons .
Due to the high number of daily calls, an average of 30-50 calls
are being carried over to the next day. A record amount of
licenses were issued in the last 6-8 weeks; Animal Control is out
of licenses , but anticipates receiving some in the next few days.
The rabies outbreak is in an active state. A confirmed rabid
coyote was found on Padre Island, which has resulted in a large
volume of phone calls to Animal Control . Reduced fee clinics are
set up this weekend at 4 locations and next weekend another 3 will
be open. More Animal Control officers will be utilized on
weekends, beginning in a couple of weeks . Mr. Beynon said that on
11/18/91 the kennels will be fully staffed; on 12/2/91 the Data
Entry Clerk position will be filled; one Animal Control Officer II
position remains open but will be filled in the near future.
CONTINUING BUSINESS: The bid for new kennel gates is still pending
in Purchasing Dept .
NEW BUSINESS: Flyers and school newspapers are carrying messages
of rabies and information on the reduced fee clinics . Dr. Sisley
informed members that Animal Control is now receiving as many as
250 calls daily.
