ANIMAL CONTROL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
City Of Minutes of Regular Monthly Meeting of June 11 1992
Corpus Administrative Conference Room - 1702 Horne Rd.
Christi Corpus Christi-Nueces County Health Department
MEMBERS PRESENT: Michael Hughes, D.V.M. , Chairman; Fred
Greenburg, Vice Chairman; Leo Luna; Cissi
Sweeney; Mary V. Penuel ; Richard A. Schafer,
D.V.M.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Larry French
STAFF PRESENT: Dr. Sisley; Cynthia Hillen
GUESTS PRESENT: 2 People interested in livestock/fowl issue
CALL TO ORDER: 2:05 p.m. by Dr. Hughes . May minutes approved.
ATTENDANCE REVIEW: All in good standing.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Cats picked up and euthanized increased in May.
2 Boxer dogs missing from the facility were possibly stolen by the
owner. There is 1 ACO vacancy and the Dispatcher is still on sick
leave. Mr. Beynon has been invited by Dr. Buttery to assist with
AC program in Richmond, Virginia. Thus far this year there have
been no rabid animals in Nueces Co. An incident regarding a
decomposed Russian boar hog sent to the State Laboratory was
discussed. Consideration is being given to picking up dead animals
on Sundays.
CONTINUING BUSINESS: A Public Hearing on the livestock/fowl footage
issue was held 6/4; everyone who spoke was opposed to the proposed
change. Dr. Sisley said the change was requested due to many time-
consuming complaints {odor/flies/noise} that take time away from
rabies control/picking up strays, which is more important than
livestock/fowl complaints which involve 2-3 trips of 30-60 minutes
each. Motion approved to recommend that the ordinance as it
relates to livestock fowl footage requirements be left unchanged.
Members agreed National Pet Week yielded minimal response.
NEW BUSINESS: Election of Officers : Members elected Fred Greenburg
as Chairman and Dr. Richard Schafer as Vice-Chairman.
DISCUSSION: Discussed feasibility of having all dead animals picked
up by Solid Waste and put in a special section of the garbage
truck. Members were advised that recommendations should be made to
the City Manager. Dead animal pick-up is in Solid Waste Dept. in
other major cities; 2 cities charge a $15 fee to pick them up; in
some cities AC picks them up at private homes, but Solid Waste
picks up on streets . Stray dogs are difficult to capture--often
requiring 2 ACOs; sweeps would be more effective than responding to
complaints.
ADJOURNMENT: At 3:00 P.M. Next meeting 7/9/92 at 2 :00 p.m.
