STAFF PRESENT: Dr. Sisley; Cynthia Hillen2
GUESTS PRESENT: Randy Sumner of Channel 10; Sylvia Reyes of the
Caller Times; Bob Braun.
CALL TO ORDER: By Mr. Greenberg at 2:30 p.m. December minutes approved.
ATTENDANCE I : All in good standing. Dr. Hughes called to report he
would be unable to attend today due to a work schedule change. Motion
approved to excuse Dr. Hughes absence.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Mr. Beynon is out of town for ACO Euthanization Medication
Certification. Statistical comparison for this time of year and last year:
less dogs were donated by owners who refused citations; less dogs & far less
cats were brought to AC by public; less bite cases were being investigated;
more animals were transferred to PAWS (possibly PetSmart impact) ; a similar
number of dogs were ehaniz , but less cats. RABIES UPDATE: Region 8 had
130 cases in 1992 compared to 85 in 1991. A coyote, which attacked 2 dogs in
Agua Dulce on 1/12/93, has been confirmed as the 1st case of rabies in Nueces
County in 1993 ; another coyote in the incident escaped. County Animal
Control will hold 3 rabies vaccination clinics next week. As a result of a
recent front page article in the Caller Times about plans to have an C
information Specialist go door--to-door to check on pet licenses/vaccinations,
veterinary clinics have been very busy; Dr. Sisley read an unhappy citizen's
letter to the newspaper about this issue and being unable to buy rabies
vaccine in fa /ranch stores. Rabies vaccine requires cold storage and
transport for maximum reliability. Advisory Committees will need to be
specific about agenda items and what is brought up at the meetings.
LIVE ALLIGATOR EXHIBIT: A&I has not returned Mr. Beynon's phone calls
regarding the background of James Smith of Sea- c International Inc. Mr.
French feels the organization is reputable, however since he anticipates
making a trip to Louisiana he will do some checking while he is there.
POTBELLIED PIG DISCUSSION: Ordinance changes to legalize the keeping of this
popular house pet is desirable. To aid in the writing of the ordinance, the
Il alth Department's legal advisor asks for specifics, including the correct
term for small potbellied pigs; minimum changes are recommended. He will be
enable to work on this for 6 weeks as he has a higher priority assignment.
COMMITTEE REPORTS: Discussed concerns about humane and safe operation of the
euthanization chamber. Investigation will be made as to whether it needs to
be replaced.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: Bob Braun of Beeville spoke with Mr. Beynon about
obtaining a permit for horse drawn shuttles on C.C. Beach; he was advised to
explain his plans to this committee. Each shuttle would accommodate 20-25
people and be drawn by 2 horses. He was advised to submit his proposals in
writing, being specific as to heat accommodation, route, weight limits, etc. ,
for review. He said he has contacted Engineering Dept. and the Lady Le
staff. Prior City Council approval is needed before a permit can be issued.
ADJOURNMENT: At 3 :30 p.m. Next meeting 2/11/93 at 2:30 p. .
