MEMBERS ABSENT: None
STAFF PRESENT: Dr. Sisley; Cynthia Hillen; Jeff Beynon; Debbie Saenz
GUESTS PRESENT: Unidentified lady; News media.
CALL TO ORDER: By Mr. Greenberg, Chairman, at 2 PM. March 1993 minutes
approved.
ATTENDANCE REVIEW: All in good standing.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Monthly Statistics: There was a decrease in the number of
calls, impounds, bite cases, loose animals, and animals euthanized. There
was an increase in license sales, animals spayed and neutered, specimens
shipped, and opossum litters picked up. Voided licenses on the monthly
statistical report represent those not used by veterinarians or for returned
sick animals. Rabies Update: As of 4/8/93 there have been 50 cases in the
region compared to 36 at the same time last year. Mexico claims to have 80%
urban vaccination compliance, but their statistics are questionable. Door-
to-door campaign: Debbie Saenz, Information Specialist, was introduced. She
will be rechecking previously checked neighborhoods; about 50% of the pets
were legal initially. Warnings were given to pet owners who were not legal.
Citations will be given to those with previous warnings who have still not
complied. She has talked to over 1000 students in schools. Children seem
interested. Brochures are sent home to the parents. Kiss-A-Pig: Dr. Sisley
is a candidate in the American Diabetes Assoc. A $1 donation earns her one
vote. The candidate with the most votes kisses the pig. Diabetes is the 4th
leading cause of death in Nueces County and a leading cause of disabilities.
HORSE DRAWN SHUTTLE ON CORPUS CHRISTI BEACH: Mr. Beynon reported that we
were unable to contact Bob Braun to invite him to this meeting; Mr. Braun did
not provide all of the information that this committee previously requested;
Traffic Engineering said some of the routes Mr. Braun wants may not be
approved, but they are willing to approve this venture on a TRIAL BASIS; the
horses will be stabled on Port Authority land. We will check out draft horse
guidelines. This item will probably be on next month's agenda again.
COMMITTEE REPORTS: The Animal Control Ordinance does not outlaw the leg
trap. The restraint definition also needs looking at. Motion approved to
create a standing committee for ordinance review. Sub-committee appoint-
ments: Dr. Hughes as Chairman; Ms. Sweeney; Mr. French; Dr. Schafer; Mr.
Beynon as ex-off icio. They will meet 4/28/93 at 7:00 p.m. at the Human
Society. Notices will be sent to sub-committee members.
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: An unidentified visitor ask about dog bites. She was
informed that "one unprovoked bite" designates a dog as "dangerous"; the law
is not breed specific; and Pit-Bulls are 4th in bite frequency in the city.
ADJOURNMENT: At 3 : 17 p.m. Next meeting 5/13/93 at 2:30 p.m.
