Penuel; Michael Hughes, D.V.M. ; Shirley Justus MEMBERS BSENT: Larry French; Leo Luna STAFF PRESENT: Dr. Nina M. Sisley; Jeff Beynon GUESTS PR NT: News media CALL TO O : By Dr. Schafer, Vice-Chairman, at 2:30. May minutes approved. ATTENDANCE REVIEW: All in good standing. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Monthly statistics: The number of bite cases is about the same but investigations are down which indicates Animal Control was more effective in catching animals; many juvenile cats and kittens with no mother were brought in; miscellaneous animals adopted/reclaimed included 2 snakes and a potbellied pig; only 2 animals were shipped for rabies examination last month, but there have already been 4 this month; the number of animals euthanized is down considerably compared to May 1992. Not all 1992 licenses are in the computer: 1 veterinarian had a backlog due to massive staff changes and then lost many when burglarized; 2 other Veterinary Clinics have not sent in licenses since February. Animal Control will start notifying veterinarians who are past 30 days sending them in. Mr. Beynon ordered 45, 000 tags this year and may have to order more. State law does not require Animal Control to follow-up to make sure all adopted animals are sterilized and some citizens are not complying; compliance is the citizen's responsi- bility. Animal Control has 2 summer workers (4 people are working on computers now) . Rabies Update: As of 6/10/93 there have been 75 cases in this region; there were 57 cases at the same time in 1992. 9 of the 1992 cases were of non-canine strain compared to 3 in 1993. More domesticl animals were affected in 1993 than in 1992. Horse drawn carriage: Traffic Engineer- ing issued Mr.. Braun a temporary permit to operate on C.C. Beach; he is now requesting to expand his permit to operate in the downtown area; Mr. Beynon would not approve his request without him coming before this Committee again. ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Dr. Schafer automatically becomes Chairman by virtue of being Vice-Chairman. Dr. Hughes was elected Vice Chairman. COMMITTEE _REPORTS: New Member: Shirley Justus was introduced. ordinance review subcommittee: The Subcommittee did not meet this past month. Dr. Hughes will set up a meeting soon. There is no rush in reviewing the ordinance. Vacation month: Motion approved to not meet in August. Horse drawn carriage: This Committee feels Mr. Braun needs to establish a good track record in the C.C. Beach area before expanding further. Dr. Hughes provided information from Carriage Operators of North America and asked that Mr. Beynon and Members be prepared to discuss it at the July meeting. Mr. Beynon says local temperature guidelines are more restrictive. Licensing by Computer: City Hall mainframe is all that is available to Animal Control now; they would need a compatible computer system before anything like this could be implemented with local Veterinarians/PetsMart. Euthanization: A new chamber was approved by the City Manager in 1993-94 budget. Discussed euthanizing by chamber vs. injections and how it affects the staff. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: None ADJOURNMENT: At 3 :25 p.m. Next meeting 7/8/93 at 2 :30 p.m.
