CITY ANIMAL CONTROL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health Department
Administrative Conference Room, 1702 Home Road
June 10, 1999
Members Present: Ben McDonald, Denny Bales, Dr. Steve Lee, Barbara Airheart, Pamela
Hoge-Smith, D.V.M.
Guests: Jennifer Lawton, Shelter Manager of the Gulf Coast Humane Society
Members Absent: Drew Reining

Call to Order: Pamela Hoge-Smith called the meeting to order at 12:40 p.m. A motion to
approve the April 8, 1999 minutes was called. The motion was seconded and approved.
Attendance Review: The May Advisory Committee Meeting was cancelled therefore there
were no unexcuse d absences. Roger Barker checked the attendance sheet and everyone is in good
standing.
Supervisor's Report:- April and May report was given by Jeff Beynon. The number of dog bites
reported has increased due to dogs being in heat. Due to lack of rain, it animals are starting to
travel into the city looking for water. Possums will increase due to gardening season. Citation
revenue is down due to automation transition and court costs.

New Business: Jeff Beynon spoke to Jennifer Farley regarding her complaint of cruelty to an
animal, by having it on a chain. Jeff encouraged Ms. Farley to write letters to the City Council
members regarding changing this city ordinance. He also encouraged her to get petitions signed.
The explosion at Coastal Quintana Refinery affected the Animal Control Facility. The public that
was at the facility at the time of the explosion was asked to evacuate. It took 30 minutes before
the facility was alerted to shelter in place. Jeff mentioned that we are still waiting to hear from the
City Council regarding the new City Animal Control Facility. The comn-dttee decided to give the
City Council more time to make their decision on the new facility. The committee will wait till
the next meeting to send another letter requesting the need and urgency for this new facility. We
will be getting our hurricane pamphlets passed out soon due to the approaching hurricane season.
Ben McDonald asked a question regarding barking dogs. Jeff Beynon's response to the question
is that there is a City Ordinance on barking dogs and complaints are handled through Municipal
Court. The committee members offered their sincerest condolences to Barbara Airheart on the
death of her mother, Elizabeth Airheart.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m. The next meeting will be held Thursday,
July 8, 1999, at 12:30 p.m. in the Administration Conference Room of the Health Department
1702 Home Road.
