Minutes of: June 9th, 2005
Members Present: Susan Thiem, SharonMassad, Kendall Keyes, Dr.William Watson,
Dr. John Buckley, Paul Reynolds and Pam Rhyner
Members Absent: None
Staff Present: Cherrie Stunz, Angel Hernandez, Robert Smith and Emily
Martinez
Guests: Lori Hoffmann, Becki Jones, Sherry Dunlap and Cheryl Martinez
1. Called to Order: Susan Thiem, Chairperson, 12:35pm
2. Minutes of Last Meeting
Ms. Massad made a motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting. Dr. Watson 2nd
the motion, all were in favor, motion passed.
3. TDH Zoonosis Control Report
The Zoonosis Report was attached for viewing.
4. Manager's Report
Ms. Stunz informs the committee that the concern from Ms. Columbo regarding the feral
cats was resolved. Ms. Stunz commented that the Kennel Master added an additional
kennel for the cats and more litter boxes. Mr. Luna also posted several signs through
out the facility that state"If you see any problems with any animal please see a
supervisor." Mr. Luna and Ms. Stunz were equally concerned and wish to insure that
any issues needing to be handled are done so immediately and not after the fact.
The Vaccination Clinic with Corpus Christi Kennel Club on May 14th was a great
success. The Micro-Chipping done by the Kennel Club outstanding; 99 micro-chips.
Ms. Massad added that more could have been done if were to have had another
veterinarian.
Ms. Stunz informed the committee that ACS is going back to regular hours for the month
of June. Animal Care is waiting for a decision from management in regards to continued
Saturday openings.
Field Report
Officer Hernandez discussed a new schedule that incorporates "beat officers". An
officer stays in an area for a week, Monday to Friday and is required to become familiar
with the problems in that area. Two officers take care of stray calls and assist with area
sweeps and an investigator is involved investigations of any problems that arise.
Officer's Hernandez and Smith went to the 2nd level National Cruelty Investigator
training in Grand Prairie.
Investigator's Report
Humane Investigator, Robert Smith reported the following statistics of animals seized for
March 2004 to May 2005: 88 dogs, 70 cats, 8 horses, a bull calf, a Macqueack Monkey,
a Savannah Monitor and many snakes. Animal Care is averaging 100-125
investigations per month. Officers are doing excellent work; those inspection notices
issued are typically compliant.
Dobie Haven has been certified as a Rescue and are now State Approved and City
permitted. Ms. Franke has been making great improvements. She is working on
beautification for a nice visitor's area. Ms. Stunz adds that if you know of anyone
interested in a Doberman please send them in Ms. Franke as Dobermans are her
specialty.
5. Old Business
Dr. Watson reported briefly on his finding regarding a three year vaccination program for
the City versus the current one year. An active discussion followed.
6. New Business
Ms. Thiem reported that while she was out of town she visited many of the Animal
Facilities in other areas. Ms. Thiem stated that if we work with Animal Control and help
them with whatever they need and bring issues to them that we see in the community
then she believes we are miles ahead of most of the facilities
Ms. Massad brought forth a discussion on Spay/Neuter Program to work with Texas
A&M Veterinary, and Texas A&M Corpus.
Dr. Buckley inquires about County Animal Control, who controls in the County once you
are out of the City Limits. Ms. Stunz replies County Animal Control.
5. Public Comments
Ms. Hoffman addressed the free advertisement from UPN Channel 7, 14 and 21. Ms.
Hoffman commented that she has been working with Ms. Stunz regarding PSA's that
would increase animal adoptions. The committee thanked Ms. Hoffman for her
outstanding efforts to increase awareness adoptions at the facility.

were in favor.
