I. CALL TO ORDER -The Special Called meeting of the Arts and Cultural Commission was called to order
at 4:03 p.m. by Brad Kisner.
II. ROLL CALL-The recording secretary called roll, announced quorum.
III. PUBLIC COMMENT— None
IV. OLD BUSINESS
Ishka Monument Committee Report
The Commissioners read the Ishka Monument Committee report and after some discussion Dianna
Sherman moved to request additional information from the Ishka Monument Committee to include the
following: has the sculpture selection changed from the original agreement; size of the sculpture and
what type of patina is on it; Is there a maintenance plan; What is the cultural element of this particular
sculpture; Is there a budget and how much has been raised. Patricia Reinhardt-Mondragon seconded.
Motion was approved. The Commissioners also requested that a representative from the Ishka
Monument Committee attend the next ACC meeting to give the report and be present to answer any
further questions.
Arts Forum
Joe Schenk announced that TAMUCC has expressed an interest in giving out Arts Awards and would be
interested in discussing their ideas with the ACC. Brad Kisner will contact Sheri Emerick to discuss
further.
Art Maintenance
Reba George reported that after discussion with the artist, Robert Perless, the City has received an
acceptable bid from Alpha to clean Orion's Belt per Mr. Perless' Maintenance instructions. A phone
interview is scheduled with James Surls regarding his maintenance instructions for Six or Seven Flowers.
The Selena Memorial will be taken care of by Dusty Durrill and there are a few stone sculptures around
the American Bank center that may possibly be cleaned this budget year as well.
Bond Fund Projects
City Council reviewed the ACC's recommendation of Dixie Friend Gay's proposed sculpture at the Oso
Bay Outdoor Nature and Learning Center at their March 18th meeting and a second reading is scheduled
for their March 25th meeting. City Council will review the ACC's recommendation of Lynda Jones'
proposed Mural for Fire Station #5 at their April 8th and 15th meetings.
V. NEW BUSINESS
Rotary Project
Dianna Sherman informed the ACC that the Downtown Rotary Club intended to commission a piece of
art honoring Veterans that would be donated to the Public Art Collection.
Five Year Planning
In keeping with the Parks and Recreation Department planning and goal setting Reba George requested
the ACC to consider an extended meeting to discuss items such as a Public Art Master Plan, Collection
Assessments and the Public Art Ordinance. Date is to be determined.
