I. CALL TO ORDER-The regular meeting of the Arts and Cultural Commission was called to order at 4:05
p.m. by Brad Kisner.
II. ROLL CALL-The recording secretary called roll, announced quorum.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - Regular Meeting, January 13, 2015 — Joe Schenk moved to approve the
minutes as submitted. Stephen Rybak seconded. Minutes were unanimously approved.
IV. PUBLIC COMMENT— None
V. OLD BUSINESS
Public Art Projects, Administration and Conservation
Reba George gave a brief update for several ongoing projects. The Orion's Belt restoration is complete
and the artist, Robert Perless, is very pleased with the work. The lighting at both the Selena Memorial
and Orion's Belt is being replaced. And, contact was made with James Surls about his piece Six or
Seven Flowers but there has been no response yet.
K Space Murals
After some discussion regarding the Dia de los Muertos mural and the Swimmers mural and recognizing
the original intent of both of these murals to be temporary works of art Joe Schenk moved to have both
the Dia de los Muertos mural and the Swimmers mural remain in the spirit originally presented to the
Commission and not add them to the Permanent Art Collection. Stephen Rybak seconded. Motion
was unanimously approved.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
Big Check Ceremony
The Big Check presentation to the 2015 Arts Grant recipients will be on Tuesday, Feb 17th before the
City Council meeting. Arrive at the City Council Chambers by 11:15.
2015 Arts Forum
Brad Kisner led discussion regarding the 2015 Arts Forum. The date will be September 10, 2015 from 4
to 6 pm. Joe Schenk offered to host it at the Art Museum. Dianna Sherman will collect a sampling of
local artists for the Commissioners to review for possible 2015 Star awards. City Staff will request Jim
Bob McMillan from the Texas Commission on the Arts to come and give a brief presentation on Cultural
Districts. There will be an announcement about the Arts Grants at the Forum. Information about the
Forum will go out to local arts organizations in May.
Collier Pool
Reba George led discussion about the upcoming percent for art project at Collier Pool. The architect has
set aside a wall for an easy to maintain mosaic. Reba has begun putting together a selection panel.
Geocaching
Patricia began discussion on possibly setting up a Geo tour of the Public Art Collection. City Staff will
meet with Patricia to discuss a plan.
