HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Arts And Cultural Commission - 06/07/2019 - Retreat Date: June 10, 2019 To: Members of Corpus Christi Arts and Cultural Commission CC: Shelly Rios Parks and Recreations, City of CC From: Nick Gignac, Member of CCAC Re: CCAC 2019 Annual Retreat Meeting Minutes On Friday, June 7th, 2019, representatives from the Corpus Christi Arts and Cultural Commission met for the annual retreat meeting at KEDT Studios Community Room in Corpus Christi at 12pm. The meeting lasted from 12pm to 5pm with a 30 minute tour of KEDT Studios at 2:30 pm. The following individuals were in attendance: • Nick Gignac, Carolyn Mauck, Dr. Laura Petican, Sarah Coles, Jim Moore The meeting began with lunch from Jason’s Deli and casual conversation. The group then began to address agenda items (see attached agenda). • Discussion of Budget o Maintenance Projects  Police Station Corpus Christi Shield needs to be added as special budget item  Queen of Sea – Fountain now working but there are some small cracks that need repair  Orion’s Belt lighting has been repaired, however there appears to be some corrosion near joints of stainless-steel members  The Return • Appears that a “rogue” maintenance person attempted to repair tile – results were not great • This project needs to be addressed and pushed on CCAC agenda  Canopy at Oveal Senior Center • There is rusting structure, needs attention • Will it be closed for bridge? • Project Update o CCAC Database Project  Work begins at end of month or when contract is received  Estimated 6 weeks duration (80 hours of work) o West Guth Park Public Art Project  Project is essentially on hold  There has been no committee meeting since last CCAC committee meeting o Side Discussion:  Misc monuments and statues being constructed on public property • Native American Statue at Hans Suter • Aviation Monument at Ropes Park o Arts Forum  Format for awards needs to be resolved  Budget includes approx. $1500 for awards and $500 for catering/event  We will need 20 awards/pieces  Need to establish and confirm a date for event  Proposed that there be no other formal speaker than possibly the artist who provides awards art pieces  Dr. Laura Petican presents potential Arts Forum awards artist candidates • 3 TAMUCC graduate students and 1 undergraduate • After reviewing work of 4 qualified artists, group propose that CCAC ask Clarissa Gonzalez to provide 20 pieces at $40 per piece o Public Art App  Nick request example of previously approved City/parks and Rec RFP in order to produce a draft RFP for public art app • Laura may be able to provide such an example  App will include link to database o By-Laws  Those who have reviewed by laws do not see any glaring need for modification  Group needs a mission/vision statement  Copies of By-laws distributed • All should review for next meeting  It was noted that it may be more effective to review City Ordinance the covers CCAC and/or SOP document o Cultural Assessment  No update o Business Arts Council  No Update • Arts Grants o Group reviewed mark-ups from Carolyn and Jim  Entire document was reviewed, and some edits and modifications were made  Dates were proposed for 2019-2020 Arts Grants calendar (see attached) • Legal Discussion o Tabled for this meeting 30 Minute Break / Tour of KEDT Studios • ACC Master Plan Ideas o Group proposes new ideas / ways to further goals of ACC within community  Space at La Palmera Mall  La Retama library check out systems for CCAC events and materials  Student artwork at parks, temporary displays  Performances and Artwork at ArtWalk • Free givewaways and grants in September at Artwalk  Collaboration at Ritz theatre  La Retama Park displays  Booth/tent at Lighting of park at Lamar Park • Mission/Vision Statement o Group spent considerable time discussing, brainstorming and developing draft mission/vision statements for ACC (photo attached) o DRAFT Mission Statement  “The Corpus Christi Arts and Cultural Commission advocated for a quality of life based in a robust creative community in Corpus Christi. It supports, promotes and celebrates a broad variety of artistic expression toward engaging an enlivened, inclusive cultural environment.” o DRAFT Vision Statement  “The Corpus Christ Arts and Cultural Commission promotes the arts by: • Providing Grants through Hot Funds • Advising civic and community organizations as well as private citizens • Encouraging community engagement in the arts • Serve as stewards of the public art resources of the City of Corpus Christi through maintenance and development of the public art collection.” • Proposed Next Agenda Items o City Council Address o Maintenance Plan o Oveal Senior Center o Next mtg July 9 at 4:40 Meeting adjourned at approximately 5pm
