CALL TO ORDER-The meeting of the Arts and Cultural Commission was called to order at 4:35
p.m. by Chair, Chuck Anastos.
I. ROLL CALL -The Recording Secretary called roll, announced quorum.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES -January 13, 2005
Motion by Lynda Jones , 2nd by DeAnn Gould-Lancaster , to approve minutes as
written.
III. HEARING FROM PUBLIC - Mural Artist: Michael Vaughn. He's painted many murals in
Corpus Christi since 1990. He is interested in creating a Murals Task Force for Corpus Christi
to have artists assist the public in an innovative concept to create an organization reflecting
the artistic needs of this community through murals. It would help to generate community
pride and establish a base of muralists. This has been tried and has been successful in other
communities. He is asking the Arts and Cultural Commission for their assistance in any input
they may have as well as any other objectives and to give hope to this concept. Lynda Jones
invited Mr. Vaughn to meet sometime in the future with the Visual Arts Committee and to
provide a proposal to the Committee as to what he would like the Arts and Cultural
Commission to do to assist with his project.
Dacquiri Richard offered her card as she works with at-risk youth and may be able to provide
some assistance to Mr. Vaughn. He can be reached at 939-9113.
Judith Prewitt arrived 4:45p.m.
IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND POSSIBLE ACTION:
1. Funding the Rush Cole Project- Mr. Anastos met with City staff and Dr. Valadez and it has
been determined that the cost to restore and rehang the Rush Cole piece will be split
50/50. The City is paying up to 50% of the repair and the ACC is paying for the rehanging.
Is the Commission okay with splitting the fees down the middle? Approximately $2800 for
the repair and $3000 for the reinstallation, or more like $2900 and $2900. Motion made by
Lynda Jones to approve the expenditure; 2nd by Dacquiri Richard. Discussion: the reason
we decided to do this is because the City Manager said he will not pay to fix it. And he's
the one that said to take it down. For clarification, Dr. Valadez said the reason it was taken
down was because it was going to cost more to work around and repair it while hanging as
opposed to taking it down and doing the repairs. No further discussion; vote called, the
ayes carried the vote.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS -
PERFORMING ARTS — DeAnne Gould-Lancaster. The FOA Brochure is ready for printing
and the Chalk Art materials have been sent out to high school and college art departments.
STIA's information was included in the brochure. Chair questioned about the "party", which is
the Kickoff Celebration scheduled for Thursday, March 3 at Heritage Park. It was questioned
that the website wasn't available, but it appears it was a problem particular to some groups
and that actually the website has been operating for some months.
Dr. Valadez commended DeAnn and her committee on the work they have been doing.
Dacquiri Richard changed topics to ask where the money b e coming from that was just voted
in? No one is sure at this time.
VISUAL ARTS — Lynda Jones. The statue by Seth Vandable should in by April 18, and the
Michael Manjarris by the end of this month. The Sea Turtle dedication will be March 16, 5
p.m., at the park and the dedication will be at the Padre Island Country Club from 6-9 p.m. Mr.
Ullberg will be there and it is also a fund raiser.
City attorneys are working with Mr. Chin.
The conservator will be visiting Dannie O'Dowdy's piece to see what needs to be done and
also the Aztec Wheel.
CULTURAL ENRICHMENT— Mando Camino — Chad and Judith have been great assets to
the Committee. The work being done on the subgrant application should make it clear and
understandable for everyone using it. The current scoring process has been working well and
a peer panel will not be needed.
STAFF REPORT—The Dot Turner mural from the Airport (decommissioned) is currently in
storage at a Whataburger storage unit. It measures 15' x 40' and is one large piece. It is very
well packaged and protected. The American Bank Center is being asked for a location to
place (requested by a City Council member). 2 cranes will be needed to move it because of
it's size and weight. Pricing will need to be done on the cost of using 2 cranes (the piece
weighs 35 tons). Since Whataburger did not get its name on the building, would they be
willing to underwrite the piece (for the moving of it) for some recognition? Dr. Valadez will
discuss it with Director Gavlik. The piece would have to be re-commissioned. There is a
potential location for placement of the piece. It would be repaired after it was in place. Chad
will discuss the project with his company.
