CALL TO ORDER-The meeting of the Arts and Cultural Commission was called to order at 4:35 p.m.
by Chair, Armando Camina.
I. ROLL CALL - The Recording Secretary called roll, announced quorum.
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - July 13, 2006
Motion by Lynda Jones , 2nd by Molly Merkle approve minutes as changed. Minutes as
changed were approved.
III. HEARING FROM PUBLIC - None
IV. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND POSSIBLE ACTION:
• Discussion and vote to approve the selected Artist(s) for the Northwest Library Expansion
Project and recommend the artist(s) to City Council. Aloe Tile was nominated to do the
art for the Northwest Library project. James Rennier moved to approve Aloe Tile, Ed
Grove seconded the motion. A vote was called and was unanimous.
• Approval of Bayfest Contingency Grant - J Prewitt
C.E.C. scored the project, the Children's art tent, with 80%. Ed Grove moved to approve
grant, Judith Prewitt seconded. Vote called, 8 approved, 2 opposed. Motion passed.
• Discussion and vote on a monthly airport installation - Lynda Jones
Amy Gazin would like art at the airport and thinks it's a good location. She contacted
Deborah Fullerton and she contacted Lynda Jones. Suggestions included a large screen
with photos or pictures of art related events. Vote not taken. Ed Grove will contact Amy
Gazin for more information.
• COMMITTEE REPORTS -
PERFORMING ARTS - No committee meeting since last ACC meeting.
VISUAL ARTS — Lynda Jones: The architects are preparing the Schematics Design for
the Southside library are being put together and a Peer Panel is being organized.
The relocation of the Jimenez piece was approved.
CULTURAL ENRICHMENT —Judith Prewitt: Committee continues to work on scoring.
Score sheets for next year will be adjusted to reflect strength of values. There needs to
be more definition regarding what is educational and what is cultural, etc.
STAFF REPORT
Jessica Burnett resigned.
Ed Grove will take over the Ad Hoc Arts & Cultural Promotions committee.
$6000 was added to the Public Art Trust Fund (This includes the $1000 left of
Contingency funds.
There will be an Artist's Reception at Heritage Park tonight from 6-8 p.m.
Ed Grove, Joe Pena and Joye LaBarrett will be attending the Austin convention.
5:15 p.m. Frank Trimble left.
CURRENT CONCERNS — There is an Art Summit Social to be held 8/17/06 at the Ballet
Nacional studio at 5:30 p.m. and the ACC membership is invited.
Bylaws Ad Hoc Committee met briefly and will be meeting again soon.
Committee monies have been approved but not received. Budget will be presented at
the September meeting.
Question presented: Is the P. A. Trust Fund in an interest bearing account?
What is the ACC's relationship to the local school districts art departments?
March is Youth Art Month — elementary art will be at City Hall; teens @ Del Mar College.
SC sponsors an Art program.
Visual and Performing Arts — contact Martha Fair.
S.T.I.A. runs a program for kids.
ADJOURNMENT - As there was no further business, Ed Grove made a motion
to adjourn the meeting, Judith Prewitt 2nd the motion. The meeting was adjourned at
5:25 p.m.
