MUNICIPAL ARTS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING - MAY 9, 1991 - CITY HALL

I. CALL TO ORDER - The regular meeting of the Municipal Arts Commission
was held on May 9, 1991, in the Committee Room, 1st Floor of City
Hall. John Yochem, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 4:00
p.m.
II. ROLL CALL - The roll was called and a quorum was present.
III. ACTION ON MINUTES - The minutes of April 11, 1991 meeting were
accepted and approved as received in the mail.
IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS
PROJECTS COMMITTEE:
Dr. Carlsen reported the orientation for the ad hoc peer panel
will be held on May 30th, 3:00 p.m. at the Multicultural Center.
Two mandatory subgrant workshops are scheduled for May 30th, 4:00
p.m. at the Multicultural Center and Friday, May 31st, 12:30 p.m. at
the La Retama Room in the Central Library.
Marion Loucks reported that the $130,000 had been earmarked for
Art projects in the early budget submissions for FY 91-92. Final
approval will be the end of July. John Yochem requested information
on the percent of hotel/motel tax that is allocated to the arts and
the revenues that had been collected by the tax. Mr. Yochem also
requested information on other art budgets that the City
administered such as the Art Museum of South Texas, Museum of
Oriental Cultures, etc. The Commission will review this information
and consider a request to increase funding for the next fiscal year.
In addition, consolidation of all arts budgets under the Commission
may be recommended.
VISUAL ARTS:
Barbara McDowell stated that fourteen artists have been invited
to submit proposals by May 21st, 1991 for the R.T.A. Public Art
project. The proposed art work will be reviewed on May 23, 1991
by the Visual Arts selection committee, 3:30 p.m. in the Training
Room at City Hall.
The two projects at the airport are still in progress.
Greenwood Library project on hold pending funding from the Paul &
Mary Haas Foundation for $1,050.
SCANNED
CULTURAL CONCERNS:
"African American Arts Calendar" Committee met on May 7th and
will meet again on May 14th, 5:00 p.m. at Multicultural Center to
discuss a unified coordination effort of the Black Heritage Month
and Juneteenth activities to a general calendar. The Corpus Christi
Arts Council will serve as liaison with this calendar scheduling.
V. CURRENT CONCERNS OR EVENTS
The South Central Plan went to City Council Tuesday. If passed
we can proceed on recommendation to City Council for the Art
projects for La Retama Park and for Interstate Highway 37.
VI. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC - There were no members of the public who
wished to speak. Discussion was held concerning the lack of media
coverage for the arts. Dr. Carlsen wants to bring a resolution
before the Municipal Arts Commission for support.
VII. ACTION ON UNEXCUSED ABSENCES - The motion was made and seconded to
excuse the following absent members: Newlyn Anderson, Barbara
Silverman and Rick Hutchins from the April meeting, motion passed
unanimously.
VIII.ADJOURNMENT - The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
