Campbell, Sandra Heatherley Members Absent: Dr. Elizabeth Sefcik, Belinda Flores Krista Ramirez Health District Attendees: Diane Prime Visitor(s)/Guests: Claudia Raybuck ROLL CALL: Dr. Diaz called the meeting to order at 12:07 p.m. REVIEW and POSSIBLE ACTION on April MINUTES: The Board reviewed the April minutes. ACTIONS TAKEN: • Dr. Johnson motioned to approve the April minutes. • The motion was seconded by Sandra Heatherley. • The April minutes was unanimously approved by voice vote. Review Absences for April: Hannah Chipman, Sandra Heatherley and Krista Ramirez • Dr. Johnson motioned to excuse Sandra Heatherley for her verbal excuse Dr. Diaz seconded the motion. No action was taken on the absence for Krista Ramirez: she was not present to give her excuse. Hannah Chipman was terminated on May 3, 2019 due to excessive unexcused absences. The Board unanimously agreed to excuse Sandra Heatherley. Staff Report- Kevin Hensley, Program Manager, STD/HIV Clinic Kevin Hensley shared with the Board a handout with graphs depicting the number of cases for STDs from 2010 to 2017 in Nueces County and the State of Texas. Kevin informed the Board of several outreach activities that the clinic is engaging in to bring awareness to the community regarding STDs. The clinic also provides investigation and prevention services in order to reduce the spread of these diseases. The clinic partners with organizations such as Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation in their Red Cord Event, which goes out into the community where sex workers are prevalent and offer them testing and resources to protect themselves and Citizens Advisory Health Board June 6, 2019 Minutes 1 others. According to recent data, syphilis continues to rise County, State and Nationwide. Kevin shared that the rise is attributed to factors such as "hook up apps", lack of knowledge, risk with Heroine and Meth and the highly contagious nature of the disease. Kevin also pointed out that in an effort to increase the services of the clinic, express testing was introduced in order to reduce the amount of time on patients that are not high risk, so they the clinic can treat more patients especially those that are exposed to STDs. Kevin expressed hope for additional staff so that the clinic can expand its internal and external services. Follow-up Discussion — Exemption for Immunizations, Jessica Hernandez, Program Manager Jessica returned to the Board to discuss some of the ways the Immunization Clinic is bringing awareness to the community about the importance of vaccines. She mentioned that there was a public service announcement with the County Judge and that at that event, 5 persons immediately received the MMR vaccine. Other outreach events took place in April and March with partners such as Mission of Mercy. There was also an in-service training with area providers where the guest speaker was a father who had lost his daughter to flu. He became an avid promoter of vaccinations. Additional vaccine resources are also left at Driscoll, the WIC offices and the Boys and Girls Club. After briefly summarizing all the efforts that are been done in order to encourage the community to vaccinate, Jessica concluded with letting the Board know about the annual Back to Flu School Drive. Agenda Items for July Meeting • Report from Aislynn Campbell about Legislature that will affect the Health District. • Discussion on the importance of raising awareness of the importance of fluoride in drinking water. Public Comments There were no public comments. Board Comments: The Vice Chair, Dr. Diaz mentioned that due to the next meeting being scheduled for July 4th, the meeting will be rescheduled to July 11, 2019.
