CITIZENS ADVISORY HEALTH BOARD
April 20,2005
Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District

Members Present: Karen Beard, Chair, Dr. Melissa Wilson, Tony C. Diaz, Ed.D, Leo Barrera, Michelle Thomas,
Melinda Gonzales, and Rose Caballero
Members Absent: Dr. Stephen Ponder and Amanda Stukenberg,Vice-Chair

Call to Order Karen Beard,Chair,called the meeting to order at
12:35pm,noting a quorum was present.
April 20,2005 Ms. Beard asked everyone to review the minutes. A motion was made and

Health District Annette Rodriguez informed everyone that she

Rodriguez noted that the program was very positive
and focused on the health and wellness of children as
well as adults.

Ms.Rodriguez updated board members of the
following events that have take place:
• County Health Fair
• Raised over$900 for Fans for Friends
(Senior Citizens)
• Public Health Week which included an
employee walk and a showcase of services
offered by the HD
• An Acting Director,Emily Martinez,has
come aboard; she is from Human Resources
• Renewal applications for the Breast&
Cervical Cancer Care&Prevention
(BCCCP)and Immunization grants have
been submitted to State
• There has been a$14,000 cut in BCCCP
• Cross training among staff has begun;the
WIC manager has switched positions with
the communicable disease
• There is an opening for a WIC director
• Petharbor.com is used for locating lost pets
• There will be a Public Health Preparedness The CAHB was invited to
(PHP)forum on Friday,April 29m,at attend the PHP forum.

Vision of the Ms.Rodriguez did not voice her vision of the Health
Health District District,noting she did not feel it appropriate with
the current search of a Director.
The County claims they were not aware of the City Ms.Rodriguez commented
posting the Health Director position. The County that staff was concerned
wanted to determine and identify the direction of the finding out about the
health district. The City claims the County was well posting through the

Melinda Gonzales said she was impressed with the
recommendations of the study conducted by Dr.
Galvan. She added if all were in agreement,the
board should pursue the recommendations.
Rose Caballero inquired if Margie Rose and Skip Ms. Rodriguez said they

conducted in the past with similar findings and
recommendations.
Melinda Gonzales asked how the board could make it

The next meeting agenda will include the power
point presentation by Dr.Wilson and Rose Caballero.
Dr.Diaz left at 1:15pm.
The surveys from the health fair were distributed and

Dr.Burgin believes the Health District would almost
be self sufficient if its funds stayed within.
Michelle Thomas requested the power point Dr. Wilson asked everyone
