Clean City Advisory Committee
Minutes of January 14, 2010 MAR 1 2 2010
The meeting opened at 3:00 p.m, 5th floor Assistant City Manager's Conference litmattigrakstiFFilgne to
conflict the regular meeting was held a week later than the recurring first ThurshyffEd in .
Attending: Daiquiri Richard, Paige Dinn, Mikell Smith, Scot Barker, Teresa Klein, and Anthony Castorena.
Absent: John Elford, Scott Baker and Joan Veith. Elford and Baker did call and notified of their absences.
Ex-officio member representatives were present: Sharon Lewis, Environmental Services, and Diana Garza,
Neighborhood Services.
City staff present: Angela Rowe, Pride/Clean City Coordinator and Lawrence Mikolaczyjk and Paul Bass,
from City's Solid Waste Services.
No mention of the adoption of minutes for the regular meeting on November 5, 2009 were made on the
posted agenda.
D. Richard introduced A. Rowe as the official Pride/Clean City Coordinator.
After action reports were made by A. Rowe of the CC Clean Sweep event, E Recycling Event and Free
Disposal Days.
M. Smith was chosen to chair the Education Outreach Subcommittee.
A. Rowe advised that the Keep America Beautiful application had been submitted and that the committee
would go through mandatory KAB training during the next regular meeting.
A. Rowe briefed the committee about various mascots that work to keep Corpus Christi beautiful, including
Picky Pete's efforts in Nueces County, Kirby- the City's Solid Waste robot/mascot and little Flora, a
Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle, designed by Ellen Fehrenkamp.
D. Richard briefed the group on the Green Living/Building Conference and La Noche Bonita events.
A. Rowe briefed the committee on upcoming events: Xmas Tree Recycling Events, MLK March, Be Bold
Conference, in partnership with City's Parks & Rec, Graffiti and Pride Committee, Graffiti Summit,
Xeriscape Garden Symposium, La Noche Bonita and Adopt A Park initiatives. D. Richard noted that
Beautify Corpus Christi adopted Orion's Belt median and have already partnered with several youth groups
and master gardener Michael Potter for a work day. D. Richard briefed the group on the upcoming
Garden's at Cole Park endeavor, in partnership with Flint Hills Resources Community Action Council and
Pride.
A. Rowe and Oscar Martinez, Asst. City Manager briefed the group on the latest recycling program
developments: the Pride group adopted a resolution to send to Council about the group's support of the
enhancements to the current program. The budget shortfall is about $6.6 million, a challenge that the City
has not seen in about 40 years. Amendments to budgets have been made, as part of the City's charter
requirement, for balanced budget. Regardless of revenues, the City's budget must end with a balanced
budget. Many options are on the table at this time, including suspension of the City's recycling program.
Alternatives for some level of service were also being reviewed by O. Martinez and Solid Waste Operations.
