Clean City Meeting Minutes IN 20 15
Committee had several discussions regarding the endorsement. They discussed the
focus of litter and anti-litter with the byproduct of tobacco.
Scot Barker made the motion to endorse the Tobacco Free Parks Initiative Tobacco,
Amanda Stephens seconded. Vote was taken, 7 yes, 1 no—motion passed.
B. Discussion and update of recycling programs in area high schools: Celina explained
that the group was at one point looking at some initiatives regarding recycling in the
schools. Sharlene Walker discussed the program they had at Moody and what they
have collected. She spoke about how there were no collection efforts going on in
the high schools for recycling paper. Some schools utilized recycling clubs but it is
unsure if that is continuing. Marie expressed that a video could be produced and
then aired on the Superintendent spotlight, that might help to garner support. It
was discussed that they could use the Moody group as an example to try to get
other schools on board. The committee felt that working through the logistics of the
process would help to get more schools involved.
C. Discussion and possible action subcommittee creation: Celina discussed that
subcommittees might help to move the committee forward with several different
initiatives. Sharlene and Marie discussed they could work forward with the recycling
initiative. It was agreed that it could be a better way to get more things done. It was
discussed that the Education subcommittee would be formed. Celina explained that
there were not any upcoming events for the committee other than glass recycling.
Chelsea discussed creating a subcommittee on clean-ups. Carolyn Moon asked if we
could approach events about their recycling. Scot asked for the schedule for Adopt-
A-Beach cleanups which will be provided.
Vic Medina talked about his experience at the HEB Feast of Sharing. Although there
were previsions made to recycle, the instructions were not carried out to each
group so recycling was done consistently all the way through. Celina suggested that
perhaps that could be an initiative for the committee to handle; meeting prior with
the organizations to enforce and ensure that they have a system in place for
recycling. Scot suggested that the Committee could help to facilitate this process.
Lawrence explained that the group could get involved with the parade ordinance
that will require event coordinators to have a plan for executing trash plans.
D. Discussion and update of Anti-Litter Campaign and other community initiatives:
Celina gave an update that the campaign would be coming to a close but
throughout the year the department would still be doing the pledge with the
committee. A presentation will be done for council and the committee would be
able to view the results as well. Celina also discussed a future initiative for the
committee which included a clean-up at the Port Ayers bus station and a
neighborhood clean-up initiative. Chelsea also mentioned for the committee to
consider areas around the city that need clean-ups.
VII. Scot Barker motioned to adjourn the meeting, Carolyn Moon seconded and meeting
was adjourned at 4:15pm.
