Minutes of November 5, 2009 -

The meeting opened at 3:09 p.m. in the sixth floor conference room at City Hall.
CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE
Roll was taken, and the following members were present: Daiquiri Richard, Paige Dinn, Mikell Smith,
Scot Barker, Teresa Klein, Anthony Castorena and John Elford.
The following members were absent: Joan Veith, and Brian Cornelius.
The following ex-officio member representatives were present: Sharon Lewis, Environmental Services,
and Diana Garza,Neighborhood Services.
The following City staff was present: Angela Rowe, Interim Pride/Clean City Coordinator and Paul
• Bass.
The October 1, 2009 minutes were discussed. M. Smith brought minor grammatical changes and
asked for verification on medical waste disposal. The group clarified that medical waste, especially
syringes should be disposed of in a harder plastic container. Also verification was needed on the Keep
America Beautiful application regarding "Executive Director" which would be discussed as an action
item for the day's slated Clean City meeting. S. Lewis clarified that the proclamation listed was for
"Corpus Christi Recycles Day." Changes were noted and will be made. Motion by T. Klein,
Seconded by M. Smith. Motion moved.
D. Richard introduced Angela Rowe as the Interim Clean City Coordinator. A. Rowe downloaded the
Clean City Committee about the upcoming Corpus Christi Clean Sweep slated for November 14, 2009.
M. Smith expressed great interest in the Park & Recreation deferred maintenance list. A. Rowe also
encouraged Clean City Committee members to attend Pride Meetings as well, since the two will be
working closely together. P. Bass also noted that A. Rowe would officially take over secretarial duties
for the Clean City Committee. S. Barker suggested that perhaps coming up with a list of individuals or
parks that need extra help for those who had time on their hands to help their neighbors. Information
was requested by A. Castorena about"Adopt a Park" or"Adopt a Median" endeavors.
A. Rowe closed introduction with the position she felt each group had, Clean City serving as more
of a direction team and Pride would serve as support.
D. Richard went on to ask for excused absences of those who missed October meeting, noting that
both members had called ahead and asked for forgiveness ahead of time. J. Elford made motion, M.
Smith second. Motion moved.
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) affiliation has been ongoing discussion. M. Smith asked that new
members be advised of difference between Beautify Corpus Christi and Keep America Beautiful
affiliation. D. Richard advised that BCCA is local affiliate for Keep Texas Beautiful- which receives
annual reports and minimal dues are paid for by BCCA. Every year we are recognized as a KTB
affiliate. The need for going for national status in KAB is additional training; application fee for KAB
is waived due to the fact that Corpus Christi is a KTB.
D. Richard also noted that by becoming a KAB would lay merit and support to the application process
for the Governor's Community Achievement Award, a $310,000 award in state landscaping project.
Our population category is the largest and Corpus Christi has come in 2nd place in the last four years.
TxDot has laid additional monies into this award due to cutbacks in maintenance statewide. These
monies depend on volunteer bases for maintenance. Other grants include counting butts- a $1500

•* prize, HEB grant for green 1 also is about $1500. All grants and -ications ask for projects that
are environmentally sound ariu-wkows other efforts in how Corpus moving towards becoming
a greener community. D. Richard also commented about possibly coming up with a logo for Clean
City committee.
Additional comments about KAB were made; clarification was needed on which board would serve
under KAB by A. Castorena. Future clarification from the KAB home office would be needed in
terms of the organizational structure.
Motion was made by P. Dinn and seconded by J. Elford for A. Rowe to serve as Executive Director for
Keep America Beautiful and D. Richard would serve as Chair. Motion moved. An application
subcommittee was formed of S. Barker, D. Richard, A. Rowe and M. Smith.
Rat Wheels was discussed. S. Barker did not see a great need. M. Smith saw no value. D. Richard
encouraged not to move forward with Rat Wheels.
Briefs were made to the committee about upcoming events: Go Green Hooks Opening Weekend the
Corpus Christi Clean Sweep and E-Recycling Event, Christmas Tree Recycling and Christmas Card
Recycling Events and the proposed Gardens at Cole Park.
The Up to U bags were also passed around for feedback.
