CITY HALL COMMITTEE ROOM 1201 LEOPARD ST., CORPUS CHRISTI, TX Members/Advisors Present Absent Staff Barry Abels John LaRue Gloria Jackson Rudy Sosa Linda Hodge Vicky Alexander Melissa Madrigal Mary Jackson Tim Wilson Anne Seddelmeyer Rosa Balderas Lauren Ranly Dr.Rhoades Margaret Drew Reining Canales Paula Rosenstein CALL TO ORDER—In the absence of Chair Gloria Jackson,Vice-chair Rosa Balderas called the June 10, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Commission on Children and Youth to order at 5:35 p.m. Vice-chair Balderas led the Commission in a prayer. 11. ROLL CALL—The recording secretary called.roll announced a quorum was present. III ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES FROM REGULAR MEETINGSOF MAY 13,2002—several members noted that five members were as both present and absent from the meeting, and that the date of the meeting was May 13th in one place in the minutes, and May 14th in another. Barry Abels arrived at 5:38 p.m. } Mr. LaRue moved to approve the minutes as amended. Ms. Rosenstein seconded the motion. The motion carried. IV. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC-None Vice-chair Balderas presented Verna Portis a plaque for her service to the Commission. Ms. Portis did not reapply for another term with the Commission. V. BUSINESS - A. Old Business-None. B. New Business— 1. Discussion of Letter from Guy Watts Vice-Chair Balderas stated that she would fax a copy of Mr.Watts letter to the recording secretary for distribution to Commission members. Talma Benavides arrived at 5:42 p.m. 2. Discussion of National league of Cities.Conference Ms. Hodge discussed the National League of Cities Conference which she and Dan Whitworth attended in May. 3. Discussion and Action on Vacancies on the.Commission on Children and Youth After Commission discussion, Mr.Abels moved that, given the strong opinions of H:\pr-dir\annes\word\ccy\minutes\2002 SCA1\IPage 1oft /// NE® some of the members of the Commission to ask Council to defer appointment to fill the Law Enforcement vacancy on the Commission to the next round,to investigate getting a"front line"representative. Ms.Alexander seconded the motion. The motion carried. After Commission discussion, Mr. LaRue moved to recommend Charley McMath, and if Mr. McMath is not available, then Robin West to fill the vacancy created when Verna Portis did not reapply to the Commission. Ms. Alexander seconded the motion. The motion carried. VI. COMMITTEE/STAFF REPORTS: None VII. DIRECTOR'S REPORT AND COMMISSION CONCERNS: None VIII. REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION,AGENDA ITEMS: Ms. Madrigal requested a presentation from the Women's Shelter on parent abuse and anger control management. Several members requested seeing what the Commission can do in the area of youth drug abuse. VIII. ADJOURNMENT— As there was no further business, Mr. LaRue moved that the June 10, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Commission on Children and Youth be adjourned. Ms.Rosenstein seconded the motion. The motion carried.
