CITY HALL COMMITTEE ROOM 1201 LEOPARD ST., CORPUS CHRISTI, TX Members/Advisors Present Absent Staff Vicky Alexander John LaRue Barry Abels Linda Hodge Rosa Balderas Melissa Madrigal Mary Jackson K Chute Margaret Canales Lauren Ranly Drew Reining Liana Gonzales Paula Rosenstein - Penny Grochow - Gloria Jackson CALL TO ORDER — Chair, Gloria Jackson called the August 12, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Commission on Children and Youth to order at 4:30 p.m. Commission member Rosa Balderas led the Commission in a prayer. II. ROLL CALL—The recording secretary called roll and announced a quorum was present. Chair Jackson introduced the new member, Penny Grochow. In turn, members introduced themselves to Ms. Grochow. III ADOPTION OF THE MINUTES FROM REGULAR MEETINGSOF JULY 8, 2002—Ms. Balderas moved to approve the minutes with the following corrections, Liana Gonzales arrived at 5:37 p.m. instead of 6:37 p.m.and Barry Abels arrived at 5:40 p.m.instead of 6:40 p.m. Mr. La Rue seconded the motion. The motion carried. IV. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC-Ms.Jennifer Taylor from Family Outreach of Corpus Christi attended. V. BUSINESS - A. Old Business— 1. Presentation on Parent Abuse by Youth Ashley Harson gave a presentation that summarized their organization and its services in our community. (Melissa Madrigal arrived at 5:40 p.m.) 2. Chair Jackson presented Rudy Sosa with a plaque, in recognition of his years of service on the Commission. B. New Business— 1. Presentation by Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Dee Ogle said their organization targets indigent care and works closely with other local youth organizations. They have identified the need for better facilities to detox and treat youth. - 2. Presentation by Del Mar College Student Affairs and Drug Education Director, Homer Ramos stated the number one problem facing all college students is alcohol abuse. His office works closely with Student Clubs that volunteer their time and talents to our community. 3. Presentation by Turning Point Counseling Service Christina Gulley stated their organization has received some Weed and Seed funds for their Prevention, Intervention and Education program. They offer free counseling H:\pr-dir\annes\word\ccy\minutes\2002 Page 1 of 2 and coordinate their programs with several other groups both locally and with our surrounding towns. 4. Presentation by Police Community Services Representative was unable to attend. VI. COMMITTEE/STAFF REPORTS: Chair Jackson and Ms. Hodge lead discussion on the current committees. Committee members will receive additional information about key task areas and possible re-organization before the next meeting. VII. DIRECTOR'S REPORT AND COMMISSION'CONCERNS: There was no additional report or concerns at this time. VIII. REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION,AGENDA ITEMS: 1. Requested Ms. Isabel Carpenter to give information on the Success by Six Program. 2. Requested Ms. Robin West and Rene Cantu to give information about upcoming legislation. IX. ADJOURNMENT: As there was no further business, Ms.Balderas moved that the August 12,2002 Regular Meeting of the Commission on Children and Youth be adjourned. Mr.LaRue seconded the motion.
