HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Commission On Children And Youth - 04/20/2009 COMMISSION ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH RECEIVED 1 REGULAR MEETING Monday,April 20, 2009, 5:30 p.m. FEB 11 2010 First Floor Committee Room City Hall, 1201 Leopard St, Corpus Christi, TX CITY SECRETARY'S OFFICE Members of the audience will be provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. A recording is made of the proceedings. You must first identify yourself by name and address. Then state your point as briefly as possible when addressing the Committee. Presentations will be limited to three (3)minutes. Any person who plans to attend this meeting and may need an accommodation is requested to contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 826-4000 at least 48 hours in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made. MINUTES I. Call to Order-called to order at 5:33pm, 4/20/09 II. Roll Call of Members-Eddie called Roll: Members present: Dr. Mary Jane Garza, Laura Smith, Amanda Stukenburg, Miles Toren, Guy Nickelson, Fran Wilms, Isaac Valencia, Robert Mirabal, Rosa Gonzales, Lorenzo Knowles, Debbie Espinoza. Members absent: Rita Morales (work), Johnny Oelschlegal (resigned), Chandace Tryon no action. III. Adoption of Minutes: Regular Meeting, March 23, 2009-adopted IV. Action on Absent Member(s)-March 23, 2009 meeting, Johnny Oelshlegal resigned, Guy Nickelson excused, Rosa Gonzales excused, Chandace Tryon no action V. Public Comment: Please be advised that the Open Meetings Act prohibits the Commission on Children and Youth (CCY) from responding and discussing your comments at length. The law only authorizes them to do the following: 1. make a statement of factual information, 2. recite an existing policy in response to the inquiry, or 3. advise the citizen that this subject will be placed on an agenda at a later date. VI. Presentation/Invitation to Dropout Prevention Summit-Stacie Talbert,Asst. Director of Parks and Recreation Dept. discussed the summit goals and invited all members to attend on May 6, 2009 from 8am to 3pm to help in goal development and course of action to help our community in drop out prevention. Janice talked about Americas Promise and efforts that are being made to help in drop out prevention. VII. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action 1. Review, revise and act upon CCY Quarterly Report-committee reviewed the report and voted to approved. 2. Committee Presentation on Data Collection Project- Request for Quote.- Eddie reported on the meeting with TX A&M. Committee was informed that three packages would be developed and presented at the next meeting. Amanda mentioned that the Data Collection Project is seen as two projects-Data collection and GIS feature. 3. Juvenile Assessment Center Letter Requesting Placement of JAC remains with City Parks and Recreation-Eddie communicated update on the study; no action has been taken at this time by City Management. Committee discussed the two letters that were presented. It was agreed that some changes were needed and the letter would be modified and emailed to committee members for approval. 4. FYI-- A PROPOSAL FOR CREATING THE Corpus Christi City Area Youth Commission - Dr. Garza informed that the city is looking at revising this commission. Dr G zA er 'o at she 't N would like Jr's and Sr's students be allowed to participate on this commission 5. Commission on Children and Youth members expiring terms on May 1, 2009.—Rita, Miles, Fran, Debbie and Guy would all like to continue serving on the commission. Eddie informed that there names would be submitted to city hall for approval. VII. Identify items to be placed on next agenda—Data Collection Project, Latchkey program, Bars near schools VIII.
