Members of the audience will be provided an opportunity to speak during the meeting. A recording is made of the
proceedings. You must first identify yourself by name and address. Then state your point as briefly as possible when
addressing the Committee. Presentations will be limited to three (3)minutes.
Any person who plans to attend this meeting and may need an accommodation is requested to contact the Parks and
Recreation Department at 826-4000 at least 48 hours in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
Minutes
I. Call to Order—Meeting was called to order at 5:33pm
II. Roll Call of Members- Eddie called roll—Members present: Dr. Mary Jane Garza, Miles Toren, Guy
Nickelson, Fran Wilms, Tara Martin, Robert Mirabal, , Isaac Valencia, Rosa Gonzales, Debbie
Espinoza. Members absent: Laura Smith,Amanda Stukenburg, Rita Morales
III. Adoption of Minutes: Regular Meeting, October 19, 2009—minutes were adopted with no changes.
IV. Action on Absent Member(s)—October 19, 2009 meeting—Rosa Gonzales ae, Fran Wilms ae
V. Public Comment: No public comment
VI. Presentation: Topic: Las Brisas Energy in Corpus Christi
1. Disadvantages—Dr. Wesley Stafford presented a power point format on the Las Brisas Energy
Plant. He explained the health related issues of people living near plants. He also explained that
there is a large number of birth defects in Nueces County. He believes it is coming from the
refineries. There are schools that are near refineries that may be causing health problems. Children
are more inclined to experience health problems. He explained the levels of mercury and the
dangers of this substance. The plant would be built where many neighborhoods would be exposed
to high levels of toxic substance. He stated that this plant would produce more pollution than all
seven refineries in Corpus put together. He stated that this would be dangerous for this area and we
may see increased deaths. Committee member asked, what can the average person do to remedy
this situation? Dr. Stafford stated to get a hold of local politicians and ask that this plant not be built
here and also stated that the plant will use a significant amount of water. He stated the medical
society is trying to stop this plant from being built in Corpus Christi, TX.
2. Advantages—Representative did not attend due to schedule conflict
VII. New Business for Discussion and Possible Action
1. Proprietary Rights of Data Project—Eddie presented that according to the agreement the City
of Corpus Christi is the owner of the Data Collection Projects. The Committee wanted
clarification on what is a deliverable according to the written agreement.
VIII. Identify items to be placed on next agenda—no meeting will be held in December 2009
IX. Adjournment—meeting was adjourned—6:27pm
