HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Community Youth Development (78415) Program Steering Committee - 04/18/201978415 COMMUNITY YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COLLABORATIVE COMMITTEE Regular Meeting Thursdays, April 18, 2019 – 6:00 p.m. South Park Middle School Library, Corpus Christi, TX 78415 Conference Room MEETING MINUTES I. Call to Order: Chair Lisa Torres called the meeting to order at 6:03pm II. Roll Call of Members: Program Manager Sandra Alvarez called the roll and verified that a quorum of Steering Committee members was present to conduct the meeting. Present members included: Lisa Torres, Ricardo Pimentel, Simone Butler, Rene Gutierrez, and Deborah Sherrill. III. Adoption of Minutes: Regular Meeting February 21, 2019. Chair Lisa Torres referred to approval of the minutes. Committee Member Deborah Sherrill made a motion to adopt the minutes as written, seconded by Committee Member Rene Gutierrez and passed unanimously. IV. Action on Absent Members: Carlos Barrera and Velma Lozano were absent from meeting, committee agreed but were excused. Deborah Sherill made comment asking what made absences excusable and not excusable. Chair Lisa Torres motioned to table absences till next meeting when Committee By-Laws can be discussed. V. Public Comment: No public comments. VI. YAC Report – YAC Report was moved up in agenda due to YAC youth needed to leave early. Youth Mark Martinez (Boys and Girls Club) discussed his trip as the YAC representative for YAC Teen Summit planning trip. Mark explained how he helped to give input for upcoming Teen Summit in June for YAC Youth and what an experience it was. Mark also brought 150 Easter Cards that YAC youth created to give to the Meals on Wheels Programs to be given to homebound elderly. VII. Business for Discussion and Possible Action: A. Subcontractor for Boys and Girls Club, Lizette Tovar spoke early due to having to transport YAC youth back to facility. Lizette discussed upcoming summer programming for Boys and Girls Club – Swim lessons, sports leagues, summer camp all aimed at increasing participation from 10 – 17 year age group. Will promote summer programming on their social media pages. B. Vice Chair election – Simone Sanders self-nominated herself for Vice Chair, Committee Member Deborah Sherrill 2nd, all were in favor and motion passed unanimously. C. Committee By-Laws tabled for next regular meeting. D. Short Term goals – Deborah Sherrill stated a short term goal of helping the fiscal agent and subcontractors meet their monthly and yearly goals. Chair Lisa Torres asked how the 78415 CCC can help to promote the CYD to the public as a short term goal. Subcontractor Rene DeLaPaz (CIS) suggested promoting CYD during PTA nominations and during school open houses, as well as speaking during school lunch to students. E. Program Manager passed out invitations to upcoming Leadership Banquet on May 9th and reminded committee members to attend and discussed agenda for event. F. CYD Summer Programming: 1. Youth Odyssey: 11 schools total for summer programming; 8 Elementary, 1 Middle School, and 2 High Schools a. 7 pilot programs but are still having difficulty with CCISD in securing sites. Program is 1 week long. b. Adventure Challenge Programs – 8 full programs, 10 pilot c. Summer Leadership Camps – youth leadership leaders are ambassadors, older CYD youth. d. Food Bank provides snacks for Youth Odyssey in summer programs. 2. YWCA: Summer Leadership Camps 6/3/19 – 8/14/19 weekly camp from 8am to 5:30pm. Promoted camps at Carroll High School Expo, website registrations, television spots. Youth will also have swim time daily. 3. Communities in Schools: 2 Summer Camps; a. Hicks Elementary 6/3/17 – 6/27/19; 4 week summer camp for 50 youth from 7:30am to 3pm. b. South Park Middle School Craft Training Camp – 2 week camp for 25 youth at the Craft Training Center for, 8am to 2pm. Youth learn about welding, drafting, electrical work, pipe fitting, and scaffold building. VIII. Fiscal Agent Report: Program Manager Sandra Alvarez gave updates on CYD monthly numbers and expended budget. IX. Identify items to be place on next month’s agenda: A. 78415 CCC By-Laws B. Marketing Goals for CYD Program C. CSNA X. Adjournment: Meeting Adjourned at 7:50pm, Deborah Sherrill made a motion, and seconded by Rene Gutierrez and passed unanimously.
