REGULAR MEETING
OCTOBER 17, 2002/5:30 P.M.

I. CALL TO ORDER: Verla Varino called the October 17, 2002 Regular Meeting of
the Community Youth Development Steering Committee to order at 5:37 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL: The Recording Secretary called roll and announced that a quorum
was present.
III. HEAR FROM THE PUBLIC: None.
IV. APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR THE REGULAR CALLED MEETING ON
SEPTEMBER 19, 2002: Bobbe Cummins-Colburn moved to accept, with
corrections noted, the minutes from the Regular Meeting of September 19, 2002.
Kimberly Rhodes seconded the motion. The motion carried.
V. ACTION ON NEW/CURRENT MEMBERS: The City Council will be considering
the amendment to our by-laws allowing two (2) youth members to join the
Steering Committee at their next meeting on Tuesday, October 22, 2002. It is
anticipated that they will approve the amendment. Therefore recruitment can
quickly proceed to fill the open positions.
VI. YOUTH ACTION COMMITTEE: Katie Childs (current President of the Leo's Club
at South Park) and Vanessa Williams (Ray High School student — previous
member of Leo's Club at South Park) introduced themselves to the Steering
Committee as potential youth members of the Steering Committee.
Roxana Arevelo arrived at 5:45 p.m.
VII. UPDATE/DISCUSSION: WEED AND SEED FALL FESTIVAL, OCTOBER 19,
2002: Details and schedule for Saturday's Weed and Seed Fall Festival were
discussed. CYD will host two inflatable games. A community needs assessment
survey will be conducted by members of the Steering Committee. The Fall
Festival will be held at Hector P. Garcia Park on Greenwood from 11:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m.

VIII. UPDATE/DISCUSSION: WORKSHOP FOR POTENTIAL SERVICE
PROVIDERS, OCTOBER 24, 2002: Details for the Workshop were discussed.
An overview of the CYD program along with the Request for Proposal process
will be covered. Marla Miller, Texas Network of Youth Services, will be the
workshop facilitator with Ms. George assisting. Steering Committee members are
invited to attend. Steering Committee members will be making follow up calls to
the agencies that were invited to attend.
IX. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Mr. Semtner gave an update on the vacant Project
Coordinator position. The annual PEI (Prevention and Early Intervention)
Conference will be held in Austin, November 20 — 22. Mr. Semtner and the
Project Coordinator will be in attendance. Since the next regular Steering
Committee meeting will be November 21, the date was changed to Wednesday,
November 13, pending meeting space and time availability. Mr. Semtner also
mentioned that if a Steering Committee member wishes to place an item on the
agenda that they are welcome to do so through the Chair.
X. CURRENT CONCERNS: none.
XI. ADJOURNMENT: Since there was no further business, Ms. Walter moved to
adjourn the October 17, 2002 Regular Meeting of the Community Youth
Development Steering Committee. Ms. Figueroa seconded the motion. The
motion carried. Vice-Chair Varino adjourned the meeting at 6:10 p.m.
