HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Crime Control And Prevention District - 06/19/2013 MINUTES CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2013 CITY HALL, 6TH FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM Members Present Estela Garcia Randy Maldonado Randy Hicks Susie Luna Saldana Cecil Johnson Mike Staff Raynnond Lara David Torres (2:50 p.m.) Scott Leeton The meeting was called to order by Susie Luna Saldana at 2:31 p.m. A motion was made by Mr. Johnson and second by Mr. Leeton to approve the minutes for Mav 15 and June 3, 2013 as printed. Motion carried 8/0, excluding Mr. Torres. Cmdr. Escalante gave the following report on crime: • Violent crime numbers are down 8.19%from this time last Year. • Murder rates are up 100%from this time last Near. • Total Index Crimes are up 3.95%from this time last Near. • Homicide clearance rate is at 92%. Chief Simpson stated violent crimes across the countiv are up for the fast 6 months of 2013. He mentioned an 8%reduction in violent crimes for the City of Corpus Christi. Currently*CCPD is maintaining a high clearance rate in murders. He mentioned the average number of murders a Near to be 19. Chief Simpson stated that CCPD will continue to focus on violent crimes-guns, drugs, and gangs. Mrs. Saldana inquired as to the total number of officers employed with CCPD. Pat Eldridge responded with the number of 405, the current academy*is at 24 and the next academy*will have 25 members. Chief Simpson talked of having a presentation ready*next month with graphic depiction on police staffing. Constance Sanchez stated revenues are up 5.41%compared to budget, 10.79%higher than this time last Near. Expenditures are 75.53%with 83%into the Near. Mrs. Saldana inquired where the 5.41%savings was from. Pat Eldridge mentioned that Pawn Shop Detail is down two people, there are 5 Cadet Trainee Interns, and vehicle costs have not hit expenditures vet. Diana Naranjo with the Juvenile Justice Center explained that for the month of May 2013 there were 81% fewer juveniles brought to the JAC for curfew violations than this time last Near. There were 39 drug tests performed in May, 2') of those tests yielded negative results,l3 tested positive mostly*for marijuana, the 3 remaining specimens were damaged. Diana stated that Life Skills Training finished at schools in May. Middle school participants received 12') hours of training and elementaiv school participants received 176 hours of training for May. Over the last two weeks in May overtime officers were used to fill in for Marshals at Municipal Court. JAC will be working to fix this issue prior to the coming school year. Mrs. Saldana inquired whether juveniles were tested for synthetic marijuana use. Mrs.Naranjo stated that the JAC does test for synthetic marijuana. Chief Simpson mentioned that CCPD is taking an aggressive stance against synthetic marijuana(K2). K2 has been a common factor in several crimes. Senior Officer Steve Smith explained that there has been one juvenile arrest in May related to graffiti. He stated that graffiti has increased since end of school year. Numbers relating to graffiti work orders have been skewed because crews have been cleaning townhomes and apartments, especially*in the South Fork Town Homes neighborhood. He mentioned that there are good leads on a federal case. Chief Simpson spoke regarding unfinished business relating to motorcycles. He stated the motorcycles were scheduled for the agenda on June 25"' but have been moved to July 9"' Pat Eldridge gave an update on protective glove order. She mentioned that there are still 25 to 30 officers who need to give glove sizes by Friday*21"and hopefully*place the order Monday*, May 24"' Captain Breedlove spoke regarding Weapon Holsters. He stated that Smith and Wesson would cover the cost of duty*holsters and the only cost to CCPD would be the specialty*holsters for plainclothes and special services officers.
