HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes Crime Control And Prevention District - 01/17/2007 `N *,/ MINUTES CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT WEDNESDAY,JANUARY 17, 2007 CITY HALL,6TH FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM Members Present Vicky Alexander Cecil Johnson Daniel Dain Scott Kucera Wilbur Hermis Butch Pool r ry Mike Rummell Rose Soto Mr. Pool called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. The minutes of November 15, 2006 were approved. Finance director discussed budget for period ending 12/31/2006. There was $1.8 million collected. There was a small dip noted for 10/2006; however, collections increased in subsequent months. Juvenile Assessment Center request for funds for programming costs associated with the data connectivity project - Valerie Villarreal advised that the connectivity quote has not been finalized; however,that the draft quote appeared to be reasonable(less than$5,000). A motion was made and approved to table the item for next months meeting. Purchase of stop sticks- Chief Smith discussed that stop sticks help assist officers who are involved in a pursuit. The stop sticks puncture holes in the fleeing vehicle's tires. Estimated cost $35,000 (100.5350). Chief Smith also discussed taser project. Chief advised how important it is to get the community educated on the effects of tasers. Taser project estimated length of time is about 6 months. Estimated cost is $70,000. Mr. Pool asked board members how their council rep felt about the Taser and Stop Stick projects. Board members advised that their council reps were in support of these projects. Mr. Pool advised that he sees both of these projects within the scope of the Crime Control and Prevention District and supports the projects. Scott Kucera inquired how many times in a week will a stop stik be utilized. Chief Bung advised that on the average, the police department experiences three significant pursuits a month. Chief Smith informed CCD members that the Taser is not going to replace any other tool but that it adds to resources that an officer can utilize. In addition, Chief Smith discussed that"Pepper Spray" only works on 10%of the population. Motion to purchase 50 Tasers and 100 stop sticks which will not exceed over$110,000 was approved by all CCD members. A motion to unable the purchase of the MC data connectivity project was supported. Motion to fund the CCISD/City of Corpus data connectivity project which will not exceed over$5,000 was approved by all CCD members. SCANNED January 17, 2006 Board Meeting I Update on Graffiti Eradication Truck-Chief Bung advised that the"Graffiti Eradication Truck" should arrive in Corpus about 120 days from 1/9/07. (Estimated time of arrival—late April or first part of May). Discussion: April 2007 Election preparation- CCD members and Chief Smith agreed that media and big event attention is necessary for the April 2007 CCD Election. Chief advised that CCD members should promote the CCD in arenas that will get the most attention. Radio Talk Shows were discussed and a"stop stick" demonstration could be possible. Chief urged that all CCD members should get with Pat Eldridge as it pertains to them attending events. Discussion: status of projects-Pawn Shop Detail has recovered $1.9 million dollars of property. It was suggested to do a press release in February when the recovered property amount reaches $2 million dollars. JAC continues intake and case management services.
