COUNCIL CHAMBERS - CITY HALL BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT: Laurie Cook Rose Vela Dr. Sandra Lanier-Lerma Cefe Valenzuela OTHERS PRESENT: Police Chief P. Alvarez, Jr. Pat Eldridge Mary Ann Robinson, City Manager's Office Jimmy Bray, City Attorney Chairperson Laurie Cook called the meeting to order. First item the Board needs to do is review the minutes of the October 27 meeting. Rose Vela moved the minutes as mailed be approved, Cefe Valenzuela seconded, and the motion carried. She asked the Board members if there were any changes to the previous minutes since this would be the last opportunity to do so. There were no changes to previous minutes. Ms. Cook moved on to the canvassing of the votes for the November 4 election. Mr. Brary distributed the precinct by precinct results report. Ms. Cook said if they wanted to poll any particular precinct they could do that, they have that opportunity. She said as Mr. Chapa said there were not any precincts that would change the outcome of the vote. The final result was 12, 727 for and 10, 744 against. She said she will read sections of the order that was distributed to the Board. She read from the order, "NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED BY THE TEMPORARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE PROPOSED CORPUS CHRISTI CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT, THAT: they canvassed the votes, SECTION 3. It is hereby declared that Proposition One passed, SECTION 4. It is hereby declared that the Corpus Christi Crime Control and Prevention District dedicated to crime reduction programs is created having the same boundaries as the City of Corpus Christi, that the proposed sales and use tax at the rate of one-eighth of one percent is adopted, and that the Temporary Board of the proposed district is dissolved". Ms. Cook asked for a motion to adopt the order. Dr. Lerma made the motion, Mr. Valenzuela seconded, and the order was approved by the Board. Ms. Cook thanked everyone and wished good luck to those that may sit on the permanent board. She said she thinks it has been good experience for all of them. The other members of the Board told Ms. Cook that she did an excellent job chairing the Board. With no further business, the meeting adjourned. SCANNED 1 SCANNED AN ORDER CANVASSING RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE SPECIAL ELECTION HELD ON NOVEMBER 4, 1997, IN THE CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI, FOR THE CREATION OF A CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT AND THE ADOPTION OF A SALES AND USE TAX OF ONE-EIGHTH OF ONE PERCENT; DECLARING THAT THE CORPUS CHRISTI CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT IS CREATED AND THAT A ONE-EIGHT CENT SALES AND USE TAX IS ADOPTED. WHEREAS, the Temporary Board of Directors of the Proposed Corpus Christi Crime Control and Prevention District ordered and called a Special Election for the creation of a Crime Control and Prevention District and the adoption of a sales use and tax rate of one-eighth of one • percent. WHEREAS, notice of said election was given as required by law; WHEREAS,said election was duly held on the 4th day of November, 1997,and administered by the City Secretary of the City of Corpus Christi, in conformity with the election laws of the State of Texas, and the results of said election have been certified and returned by the judges and clerks thereof; and WHEREAS, the Temporary Board finds that the said election was in all respects lawfully held and that the City Secretary's tally and certification of results to the Council are correct: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED BY THE TEMPORARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE PROPOSED CORPUS CHRISTI CRIME CONTROL AND PREVENTION DISTRICT, THAT: SECTION 1. The tally of votes cast in the special election held on the 4th day of November, 1997 made and certified to by the City Secretary of the City of Corpus Christi, a copy of which is attached hereto and made a part hereof, and the same is hereby adopted as the official tabulation of the votes cast at said election, and that said tabulation be filed and recorded in the official records of the City of Corpus Christi as the official canvass of said election. SECTION 2. The results of such canvass are declared to be: 7JRB07I0.207 ‘itav "410 CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI PROPOSITION 1 12,727 FOR The creation of the Corpus Christi Crime Control and Prevention District dedicated to crime reduction programs and the 10,744 AGAINST adoption of a proposed sales and use tax at the rate of one-eighth of one percent. SECTION 3. It is hereby declared that proposition one passed. SECTION 4. It is hereby declared that the Corpus Christi Crime Control and Prevention District dedicated to crime reduction programs is created having the same boundaries as the City of Corpus Christi,that the proposed sales and use tax at the rate of one-eighth of one percent is adopted. and that the Temporary Board of the proposed district is dissolved.
