Food Advisory Committee Meeting

Members in attendance: Lisa Pollakis-Chair, Dr. Nina Sisley, Gabriel Hernandez,
Anthony Hernandez.
Members Absent: Jack Baker
The meeting was called to order at 2:10 p.m. by Lisa Pollakis. Pollakis asked for a
motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting a motion was made by Dr. Sisley,
with a second by Mr. Hernandez to accept.
Cuevas presented the Manager's report. He reported that there are still two (2)
positions open with the Division (Staff Assistant, Health Inspector II). He stated that he
was hoping that these positions would soon be given the "green light" to post. Cuevas
also stated 1,550, 2011 invoices had been mailed out. Gabriel Hernandez stated that
he had already submitted his payment and had received his 2011 permit.
A presentation by Noelia Rodriguez concerning a project on Healthy.Lifestyles was to
be made, but was unable to attend. A discussion continued on this subject with
Anthony Hernandez stating that a program such as this was in place in San Antonio.
He stated that the San Antonio Health Department is successfully working with eating
establishments to change their menu's to promote healthy choices. Anthony Hernandez
agreed it is a good plan, but would have to take "baby steps" to get accepted here in
town.
Cuevas stated that Gabriel Ramirez would be attending a meeting in November and
report to the committee the outcome and plans.
Lisa Pollakis stated that there was a negative impression of the Division's inspectors by
some of the establishment owners. Cuevas stated that it is the goal of the inspector to
educate the establishment on proper procedures. Cuevas did state that he would speak
with all inspectors on their demeanor, and not to think of themselves as a "police officer"
going into an establishment for inspection.
Cuevas asked the committee what other information they would like to have from the
Division. Pollakis stated she would like information on establishments with at least 10
complaints within one (1) months time, information concerning food borne illness, and
any establishments shut down due to major deficiencies. Cuevas stated that starting in
2011 this type of information would be given to the committee.

There being no further business Pollakis asked for a motion to adjourn, Gabriel
Hernandez made the motion with a second from Dr. Sisley. The meeting adjourned at
3:42 p.m
