Minutes FOOD SERVICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE November 14, 2000 Corpus Christi—Nueces County Public Health District Administration Conference Room Members Present: Gabriel Hernandez, Carlos Moreno, D.W. Haven, Chair, Tom Watson, Suzanne Gilliam, Robert Ard, William Schroeder Staff Present: Nina M. Sisley, M.D., Roger Barker and Larry Jones 1NU b Guest Speakers: Thomas Alexander, M.D.; Mimi Kyle, Cancer Control Director; Gerald Vorhees, M.D.; Brad Lomax; J.P. Jordan . D.W. Haven, Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. The minutes of the September 20, 2000 meeting were approved as written. Attendance Review: Dr. Sisley went over the attendance sheet with the board members. Everyone is in good standing with their attendance. Dr. Sisley went over the proposed changes to the Animal Control Ordinance regarding changes to the food establishment portion with the Board members. Carlos Moreno motioned that the changes be accepted. The motion was seconded and approved. Environmental & Consumer Health Protection (E&CHP) Directors Report: Given by Larry Jones. Larry indicted that there have been 6 smoking complaints this year. Three of which have been in restaurants and the other 3 in workplaces. Program: Chris Large, Coordinator for Citizens for Smoke-Free Environment Coalition, with the American Cancer Society spoke to the board regarding smoke-free restaurants. She informed the Board that the coalition sent out approximately 1800 surveys regarding eating out in smoke-free restaurants. The reposnse was about 400 citizens (smokers & nonsmokers) would still eat in these restaurants. Ms. Large indicated that there is a large number of children exposed to smoke and second hand smoke, which convinces the American Cancer Society, that, this, a public health threat. Ms. Large concluded with requesting that we all support making Corpus Christi a sparkling City by the Sea by passing an ordinance to ban smoking in restaurants. Audience Participation: Several guest speakers took turns in voicing their views and opinions regarding smoke-free restaurants. The audience seemed to be divided with their views on this issue. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Corpus Christi—Nueces County Public Health District, 1702 Horne Road, Administration Conference Room.
